Thread: Mini Galleon

    Post

I looking for a tiny, 16 foot, version of a mini Spanish Galleon Pirate Ship. Like something you might see in a Miniature Golf Coarse. But to really sail in. A while ago there was a neat site on the web of Mini-tugs, by Berkeley Engineering. Their's where tugboats of coarse but they where rudimentary flatbottom plywood boxes. Almost like Drive-up esspresso Booths. They were dripping with cuteness. I want one of those but in a small pirate ship version. One Mast, One Yard. Tall in the stern, and old time anchors at the Bow. Has anybody seen something,in the way of plans, I can use? I'm leery of designing it my self, if I can help it. But I may if I must.

I've seen something like this before. I almost think there is one posted in the "My Wooden Boat" section of the WB home page. Have you been through those yet, Steve? It will take awhile, but it's well worth it, at any rate.

Also, as far as mini-but-sailable ships go, I recall reading that there was a real craze on them about a century ago?

    BEAM 5 ft 4 in

    That small enough for yer?

I keep coming back to this one... and the missus keeps whackin me over the noggin "we need a real ship Shane not a flamin toy"... and I keep slappin her bum back sayin "YOU wont free me the moolah to ruddy well buy a real ships plans woman!" and so it goes

but I reckon it would be an absoflaminlute hoot!!!

    Whoa!

I'd buy a round hull version, hard chines seem preposterous under such a famous rig.
Such a special design raises questions before you buy the plans.

    Are there basic accomodations?
Might be trailerable on a proper trailer.
How big the hassle manoeuvering her without a crew?

Just a thought here, but I bet my wee yawl could be modified to suit your needs with a few pieces of cut & painted plywood around the cockpit. A square sail might be added with some thought. The current rig includes no halyards, so you really be starting from scratch with it.

    See www.shellboats.com for a Swifty 13

By the way, she sails very well, and is balanced better than any of the few other dinghies I've sailed. If this is for kids (and not you!), I bet they'd love the cabin that's already on her.

what about modifying a Stevenson's Weekender (or the larger Vacationer),
there are some fellows that play pirates with them in a quite serious way.

Or you can think of something like this :

    trailerable, 15'11", can carry 6, but its fglass ( http://www.noquartergiven.net/merchant.htm )

To kill some time reading you can give a look to the pirate webring
