This splendid classic yacht Ichiban is constructed with strip planks of Philippine mahogany over steam-bent ribs and bulkheads and an interior teak finish. Built in 1961 in Hong Kong by Cheoy Lee to a Bill Lapworth design she was raced in the Transpac Series (first in class and 2nd overall in 1961) and in Bermuda, and then brought to New Zealand by a Canadian boatbuilder who owned her until 2004. She had an extensive restoration from 2008 to 2011.

Sadly she was damaged in January by collision with something floating off East Cape. This has crushed timber at the stem, sprung planks in the hull, cracked frames and moved joinery. She is being sold on behalf of her insurers to the highest offer.
