Wow! That was amazing! Imagine what that was like for the guy out on the bow.

The new software lets us post these vids like this:

The guy at the helm looks so relaxed but you know his heart must have been pounding like crazy.

Is there any feeling in the world that can compare with having just pulled off something like that without a scratch, however dumb it may have been? I've made a few comparable airplane landings and I still smile when I think about them.

Think they might have done this before. The skipper sure had a clear understanding of how she handled a following sea.

It could have gone SO wrong in SO many ways SO fast... yet he must have at least entered the harbor before if only in lesser conditions. I would not have been able to hold the camera on it if I'd seen that. I also wonder if he could see how confused the waves in the entrance were as he approached from to windward.

    Can you say "adrenalin rush?"

I usually find that stunts like that are accompanied by a large audience. You can judge your performance by the applause. The bigger the screw-up, the louder the admiration.

For me, situations like this were the toughest part of doing deliveries. Strange boat, strange harbor, short handed, exhausted from weeks at sea battling the weather...I once found myself, passed out standing in the fore hatch, the boat tied securely in the slip, with no memory of docking.

With no local knowledge I would have "wussed out" of that harbor entrance. I just haven't got the gronicles.

I think so as well. What looks like a wild broach put them in perfect position. Watching a couple times, I think I see the boat hanging back until just the right moment. That fast surf through the entrance insures that the bow wouldn't be buried in a wave that could have steered her into the jetty. Equally amazing whether it was dumb luck or great skill.

    Good lord.

    Insanely great AND greatly insane.

I have new respect for Danish sailors.

EDIT: turns out the title on the video says "insane sailing" ...

That was good boat handling, pure and simple. What I see is the boat hanging off the entrance until a judgement is made on the wave coming behind... then he had to estimate how far the boat would slip sideways as he broached the harbor entrance. Very well done, but yes it could have gone wrong.

I figure the first order of business after they tied up was a trip to buy several pair of new shorts.

Here's the local guide to Svaneke Havn:

Fishing harbour, 30 berths. Outer harbour bets rough during onshore winds. Local boats have right of priority in inner harbour. The harbour gate getween the inner and outer harbours is closed during strong onshore winds. May be entered day and night, allowances being made for wind, current and visibility. Should not be entered during onshore winds. Compass variation occurs, and strong currents coupled with bad visibility can be dangerous. Svaneke Lighthouse is located on Sandkaas Odde and will guide boats in during approach. Steer to the north in the white angle of the harbour light until the harbour's leading lights guide the boat in at 297 degrees. Be careful: If approach is made form due east of the leading lights, boats are led through the skerries at Maageflak SE of the harbour. Approach is prohibited of a black ball is displayed or 3 vertical red lights ar shinning on the mast north of the harbour. The harbour gate to the inner harbour is closed if a fixed white light is shinning under the lower light of the leading lights. The current in the approach channel is rarely important.

I have to think the skipper knew just what he was up to. Folks who sail those conditions on a regular basis learn skills the rest of us can't even imagine. At least the ones who survive do.

Depoe Bay on the Oregon coast has a narrow passageway which charter boats habitually transit in a following sea ... armed with years of local knowledge and extra sets of brass balls. A skilled Googler might find some video of that ...

That looked like excellent boathandling by a someone who knew that boat and place inside-out. It also shows how capable a decent plastic cruiser-racer is - people can try to dismiss them as 'tupperware boats' but the best of them are excellent.

Looks to be the Port of Svaneke on an island in the Baltic Sea, part of Denmark.

This was the other one. I watched similar one stormy fall day, sitting in the Mexican restaurant.

That skipper may well be--is probably--very good. But that transit proves its better to be lucky than good eight days a week.

If you understand waves, if you been a surfer, if you travel across bars and harbour entrances regularly- this was ok. To armchair sailors viewing from a video taken from that angle it looks much worse than it is.
