Question

Ok folks, what am I missing? The full-size patterns for Iain Oughtred's Acorn 10 dinghy do not show a notch in the forward station molds for the hog, whereas there are cutlines shown for notches in the aft stations. I'm assuming this was just an oversight, and it is certainly easy enough for me to layout the notches myself, but I'm just questioning my assumption.

Do the garboards overlap the hog? Seems to me the lapstrake kit pram I built was like that too and the garboards (didn't even know what they where called back then) did overlap the hog. Standing proud, it would sort of set the stage for the beveling on up around the hull.

Ye pram turned out to be ye garden decoration Some of the planks ended up having only a nodding acquaintence with each other and had vast gaps filled with thickened googe. I think a lot of that was that all the planks where pre-cut and might have changed in Colorado's dry climate. Ignorance would have come into play too.

If WB forum existed 10 years ago, I didn't know about it. This place is like having a fleet of experts willing and ready to offer advice and sage counsel! WB forum is the proximate reason I've decided to tackle the Whilly Boat!

Yeah, the garboards overlap the hog, which is beveled. Then there's an outer stem, an outer keel, and a skeg that cover the joints. That's why it makes no sense to me that the patterns show the hog notched into the aft molds, but not the forward molds. Strange. I could write to Iain and simply ask the man, but I'm not patient enough to wait for a transatlantic snail-mail round trip.

Your hog rest's on top of the 1st mold and when you do your fairing for the garboard it'll all fall into place. I did it on my 8' acorn last spring and it worked out just fine.

I built this boat, a few years ago & I dimly remember the situation you're talking about. (I dimly remember a whole lot of stuff!)
Just remembered, I got the old plans right here. I took a quick look, the plans are correct. The "hog" is notched in aft and not forward. Don't notch the stations where it is not shown as notched. Keep the faith, baby.
Anytime you want to talk "Acorn", I'm only too glad.

Oh yea. The biggest mistake I made building? Not taking the plans to a printer & having a black line copy made! Those plans will fade away even in indirect light.

Bud;

The plans I got from WB look like blacklines to me... when I first opened them up, I thought for a second I'd gotten originals! Does this mean I don't need to have them copied?

Dave - how goes the hog notching? If still having trouble, send an owl to Hogwarts

Meerkat: yeah, the Acorn 10 plans I got from WB look like blacklines also.

Regarding the hog notches, the more I look at this, the more I think they ought to be there and were omitted from the station mold patterns. In a smaller drawing on the plans that shows the complete mold setup, you can clearly see indications that all the molds ARE notched for the hog. The written directions also indicate notching the stations for the hog; there is no mention of omitting notches at any particular station.

Station #1 in particular is quite odd. There is a very short flat at the bottom, narrower than the hog itself. I don't see how the garboard could possibly lie correctly on the mold, with the hog perched precariously atop a narrow flat at the top of the mold.

I've decided that I'm just going to draw in and cut all the "missing" notches in the forward stations, such that the hog can be beveled to agree with the molds. Once all the molds are set up on the strongback, it should be easy enough to see if the lines for the hog and garboards are fair.

Worst care, I'll have made a bad decision and will have to adjust or re-make a few of the station molds.

Now, about that owl...

Bud:

regarding my previous post - not notching the forward molds looks all wrong, not to discount your first-hand experience, I just don't get it!

How on earth does the garboard lie on station #1, with the flat at the bottom of the mold being narrower than the hog?
