    Default pennant burgee stanchion thingy

Can anyone help tell me what this is or exactly what it is called.
Doesn't seem right to call it
"That thing you hang your yacht club burgee from"
Any help on identifying this piece would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Ryan

    Called a pig stick.

Make one out of a dowel, piece of welding rod, small bronze screw and washer. The goal is to make a burgee attachment that rotates around the stick and flies over the masthead so that it goes round and round in the breeze.

Take the welding rod, put a small loop in one end big enough for the screw. Now that screw gets turned into the end of the dowel with the washer providing a bearing. The rod is bent down parallel to the dowel and another loop in put in the remaining end big enough to go around the dowel. Now the welding rod swivels around the dowel easy day. Of course you do all this bending before you put it together and this is not an original design, credit to the Pardeys in one of their books.

Seize the burgee to the welding rod, I prefer to simply sew the edge of the burgee to the welding rod full length as it stops it from puckering up. To haul it up, make your halyard an endless loop, tie a clove hitch about a foot up the dowel and then another at the bottom of the pigstick and heave around smartly.

Or you can buy one for 70 bucks: http://www.hathaways.com/xcart/produ...roductid=16619

Or you can see this old WB forum posting: http://forum.woodenboat.com/showthre...ck-Wood-Choice

The one I have appears to be a fixed type and sweapt back like something out of the '60s. I have seen these on the bows of some classic wooden boats.

Is there another name for it?

It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

    I'd call it a staff.

I've always called it a pigstick, but pennant sounds a lot classier. If on deck, it's a jackstaff.
I was born on a wooden boat that I built myself.

I went to the trouble to look it up in one of my old old nautical dictionaries and found "nada". However my father always referred to the staffs at the truck as "Pig Sticks" and those on deck as "Flag Staffs'" I should think that it is a matter of "Different ships, different long splices".
