    Default Aftershocks.

    We haaaaaates them.

Christchurch has been rocked by its largest aftershock in almost four weeks.
The magnitude 5.0 aftershock struck at 10.21pm on Monday night, at a depth of 12km, 10km west of Christchurch. A second quake, measuring 4.0, hit at 10.29pm.
Both quakes were felt throughout the Canterbury region.
They were followed by a 4.4 shock which struck 20km south of Darfield at 6.29 this morning, which was felt in Christchurch.
The first aftershock was the region's largest since a 5.1 magnitude tremor that caused further damage to the city on September 8, following the large 7.1 quake which hit the city a month ago.
GNS Science seismologist John Ristau said the 5.0 quake was "quite shallow" and "potentially damaging" to property.
"We haven't seen anything that size since the first few days [after September 4]," he said.
"If there were structures that were already significantly weakened from the main shock, this could cause a lot more damage than you might normally expect for a magnitude five."
Police southern communications spokesman John Doherty said there had been no immediate reports of damage.
Canterbury has now had more than 1000 aftershocks since the initial 7.1 quake.
Ristau said that while the rate of aftershocks had slowed, the activity could continue "for months".
"There is always the potential still for the odd large one to come through," he said.
A 1000? Because hundreds just wouldn't be enough? For last nights little event, I was lying in bed (nobody do that joke, I'm over it) and looked at the bedroom door and the frame seemed to move 4" side to side at the top. I'm guessing, after all of this, our little old house is only mostly on it's foundations.

Mind you, on the bright-side....this is all good practice for a live-aboard.

I'd just got into my favourite birthday suit when it hit, and was feeling a tad vulnerable! I was on the verge of leaping back into a pair of jeans, but couldn't be bothered - as you you say, not doin nuthin for anything less than a 6.2

Honestly don't know what will happen with a lot of these old houses (built 1929), the rough-cast is cracking and there was a lot of movement in the framing last night.
Might have to get up in the roof and hammer things back together soon.

Sheesh Seanz, that'd drive me daft. What you say about the house is a worry, especially seeing that there are lots of them. How are the govt handling the ongoing shocks, must make it difficult to even think of rebuilding. BTW, what do tghe geologists say about that? Build or abandon?

It's all a bit uncertain for those of us in older places with a bit of damage, it's not hard to imagine the cost of repairs exceeding the value of the building in some cases.
It's a huge strain for other people that have had their houses destroyed by liquifaction as there is some debate over what to do next, remedial work on the land or turn areas into parks. There's a whole estate in Bexley (Christchurch) that probably should never have been built. On our side of the 'block' here we have seven occupied dwellings out of about twentyfour......the other side of the stret is fiiiiiine...jammy b'stards.

The geologists are ummming and ahhhhhing as the land is still settling, after a month. Mind you, in one spot down the road the earth moved over 12' closer to the sea.

So, if I show up on Waione, you'll let me in? But if I show up on the Hartley.......

Buy a big barge and build on that, then if it liquifies or slides you into the sea you'll still be OK. About the Hartley, I'd be a bit worr.................. OTOH 2 blokes rowed it and another got close in a kayak so maybe you'll be OK if you pick the right season.

    Didn't....even.....feel.....it.

My partner felt it, there is much significance in your "physical attitude" during a quake (I believe), standing up; may not notice a quake, sitting; probably will notice, trying to go to sleep, definitely will notice.

It's been a big event...$Billions of damage...that's the story at the moment with the house. We have all services and the roof doesn't leak and even somewhere to move to (MILs), we're good.

When my delightful daughters were working in Hokaido they slept (OK ,they work up but stayed in bed !!!! ) through a 7 150 km away ,fortunately Japanese buildings are well designed for quakes .

A good little article on the after-effects. Not at all OTT and a good reflection of how things are for people in Christchurch.

This isn't as bad as a disaster that completely changes the 'view-scape' but it's quite jarring in a way. Drive down a road, everything looks fine and then it's "Aww, that's gone, that was a cool old building". It's changed our perception a little as to what makes a "des-res"....we have friends that have lived in old brick ware-houses. We used to think that would be fun. Not now. A nice modern timber dwelling is on the cards.

I remember seeing a series of earthquake related photos in National Geographic .There was one of a federation style brick house in Dunedin IIRC , it was in a million pieces as the bottom of a 60 foot slope .The other I remember was of a US style stud and plywood bungalow ,ply floors , wall and roof , with tarred shingles over .It was also at the bottom of a 60 foot slope , but in one piece ! If the occupants hadn't been hit by furniture or the fridge they would be fine !

One thing our US friends do well !
