Default Coming Soon to Salem Mass! (RF)

In case you haven't seen it, the latest from the web site of our favorite "pirate" ship, anchored in Boston harbor for the last month ...

RawFaith will be setting sail for Salem next week when the winds turn in a favorable direction. It has been a wet week in Boston Harbor and we are looking forward to making the trip in fair weather.

You are invited to join RawFaith and her crew in a celebration of her October dockage in Salem, MA. Captain McKay will give a presentation about RawFaith's design, construction, rigging, and sailing which will be followed by a Boston skyline sunset cookout. Donations will be accepted to fly in Elizabeth to visit with us in Salem.

The weather forecast is favorable, as will be the tides, for anyone wishing to travel out to the tall ship by skiff. The Captain and Mate, Linda, will also be actively recruiting volunteer sailors for the day trip North next week

It's good to see that they've got their computer guy back again, so we can all follow what they are up to.

About a 20 nautical mile trip, more East than North, at least by the compass.

Still more in the direction of Maine than NJ

You are probably safe 'til next Summer, unless they get blown out to sea by a stiff westerly, then sent your way by a Northeaster.

They did put a few witches to death an Salem a long, long time ago. I believe they were hanged, not burned. Certainly not one of the high points of North American jurisprudence or tolerance, but that's the sort of thing that can happen when the Koran, Bible or Torah is taken too seriously as law.

Might be the start of a good Guy Faulk's day bonfire though. Never saw such a badly hogged boat that wasn't older than I am.

It was actually in Peabody but don't tell that to anyone in the huge Halloween industry that a bit of historical misinformation (Peabody was part of Salem at the time) has created in Salem. Halloween is now bigger in Salem than Christmas. Followers of this saga will remember that it was a voyage to Salem a year ago to be a ghost ship on the waterfront during their annual two week haunted holidays blowout that began the Portland saga. This trip was interrupted by a storm of 12 kts gusting to 15 which so incapacitated the crew and overwhelmed the clothesline steering gear that she was forced to seek shelter in Portland resulting in probably more words being written as a result of a ship seeking shelter than ever in the history of sail.

Hopefully, there will be a spell of gentle westerly winds followed just at the right time by SW winds backing, again just at the right time, into the east so that the ship can get there on time to provide joy to the many children who will scamper up and down steep ladders seeking ghosts and scary thrills. I can't think of a mission for which she is better suited.

12 gusting to 15? Holy cow ... that must have been when they stared down those 30-foot waves that Mr. McKay keeps talking about.

    I'm in Salem,

Haunted Happenings kicked off with the parade last night and runs until Haloween. Prevailing winds blow into Boston Harbor so it may take some time for Capt McKay to get underway.

Many of the witches were from what is now Peabody, but not all. If you did not rat someone else out you hung, except for one guy who was pressed to death. The Judges house, court and the gallows were all in what is now Salem.

When she shows up I will get some pictures.

I wouldn't put too much stock in what the web site says; if there's no one to update it, then the information just gets outdated. The wind hasn't been real favorable for a jaunt to Salem for the last week, He'll have crew when the wind is right, he'll still probably need a tow when he gets in close to the harbor.

I rowed the harbor Monday and there was no sign of RF. As Roger and Harbor Master have mentioned, the wind is a big problem for a trip like this, a breeze that gets you out of Boston keeps you out of Salem.

If he could get her to point higher it's a nice sail.

    As of 4:30 this afternoon:

RawFaith is safely at dock in Salem, MA near the Salem East Indiaman, Friendship. She is awaiting Coast Guard inspection for her temporary mooring certificate before tours can begin.
As someone astutely noted in early November of last year:

I wonder how the harbormaster in Salem feels about an unexpected "house guest" for the winter. Given RF's history, there's a good chance that could happen.

I'm having some trouble downloading photos from my phone camera, so no picks right now.

I did go on board for a few minutes. Capt McKay was answering questions when people asked. I didn't see formal tours as such, more like come on board and look around. Below decks was closed, I don't blame them for that at all, things go for a walk when you have a lot of tourists on board.

That walled cut looks like a good safe winter berth for her. i feel better about that versus her berth in Portland last winter, kind as Phin Sprague was to let her lie in.

bump. No updates from Salem for a full two weeks. It's now mid-November. At this time last year, RF was tied up at the PYS docks in Portland, there to stay until spring. Any reason to think she's going anywhere? Or is Salem it for this winter?

The folks at the NPS might consider asking Friendship's low-class "neighbor" to move along. From the Salem News, dated November 19:

    Ship afire

The Fire Department got a few concerned calls Wednesday morning when a black cloud of smoke appeared near Friendship. It was definitely smoke from a fire, but it wasn't aboard Friendship. It came from Raw Faith, the reproduction 1600-era pirate galleon docked nearby. Turns out somebody used a lot of newspaper to get a wood stove going that morning aboard the ship.

And so it begins... we should start a support group for those of us that have had the pleasure to 'work' (deal?) with the Raw Faith. At the rate its going, it would be a national organization in no time.

Okay, due to the overwhelming requests - twist my arm.

The RawFaith has been at the docks belonging to the National Park Service. Though he was given permission to use the docks, now he says he doesn't have the crew to leave, he wants to stay the winter. They want him out of there, so they called the Salem Harbormaster. They had a little shouting match, and the Harbormaster arrested the good captain for trespassing. I believe he yelled at the HM something along the lines of, "You won't be happy till I take the boat out to sea and sink her..."

He has till the 9th of December to leave or the case goes to court. He says he'll gladly leave, but he doesn't have crew, and he has to wait for the weather. We've heard the story before, now he wants to head to Bermuda, but has to wait for the right wind direction. The HM doesn't want him to send him out to sea, but if he can't stay at the NPS dock, there's no place else in Salem for her to stay. Salem's HM asked me how big a crew he'd need and I think I said at least 6, but where to find 6 naifs?

Stay tuned, she may be back in Maine before too long!

Actually, a large wooden thing is remarkably easy to more or less park and stay. I'm thinking of an infameous old wooden grain barge made into a very cool house that took years and years for MassPort to kick off their pier and decades for various private dock owners to get rid of. If you work at a combination of denial and ignore 'em . . . It takes huge money to go through the legal process of condemning something and then the municipality is stuck with expensive disposal. That's why so many abandon vessels line the intercoastal. This is a long tradition but older stuff, like the Wiscasset schooners, become scenic.

McKay is not a person of integrity, vision and courage. Rather, he shows a pattern of delusional abuse of others in almost every dealing with no shred of taking responsibility for anything.

Wow. I suspected that he didn't have permission to stay the winter and that things would come to a boil, but this goes beyond anything I imagined.

I understand why the HM doesn't want to force him to leave, but unless and until someone puts their foot down rather firmly, it seems that Mr. McKay will abuse any kindness or mercy he's shown.

If they can't or won't force RF to leave the harbor, they should at least block McKay from living on the boat over the winter.

Its not a matter of can't or won't force him to leave, its a matter of getting him to leave on his own.

If you block him from getting to the boat over the winter you have essentially evicted him from his home and seized his boat. The major problem with that is that it now leaves them semi-responsible for the boat.

How do you propose they do that? And where does he go next? Do you simply punt him down the coast (or up the coast) to another harbor where the HM is less "persuasive"?

The next newspaper, blog or tv reporter who perpetrates the blatant lie of "reproduction 1600-era pirate galleon" is going to get a stern talking-to from me. This flagrant nonsense has got to stop! Folks who co-enable a madman's delusions ought to be charged as accomplices.

More effective ... a quiet and helpful explanation of what is reality versus what they've been told. Otherwise, they'll probably chalk you up for an early afternoon drinker and ignore you outright.

    From the Points East article:

A pillar of George McKay's philosophy of life is that everything you need to know to do anything is readily available from any number of existing public resources
    .

So this means he will be choosing to represent himself in court, I take it.

"everything you need to know to do anything is readily available from any number of existing public resources"

My mother and father are reputed to have only told one lie each to each other. Mom was raised in moderate wealth in Wellsley Hills with maids, a cook, driver, groundsman etc. and really did not know much about housework when she and Dad started dating in the romance of post war Pan American. He asked if she could cook and Mom, reasoning that there were cookbooks and she could read, said, "Yes." Dad's little lie was, "Well, it doesn't really matter."

My surviving sibs are too young to recall the early part of Mother's learning curve towards becoming an ok if unimaginative cook. I recall the charcoal briquettes masquerading as biskets. And the sole leather stolen from our cobbler and fancifully called port chop.

Boat building and seamanship are a bit like cooking. Sure it's all there in some book somewhere. But McKay didn't read the right book.
