Its pretty feral out there, just come back in. We've cleared the driveway 4 times now so we can get out if needed, been to the boat( doing well so far with her 10 lines.) 3 big ( BIG) branches broken and hanging up on three different trees , some tree ferns down, debris everywhere.
Feels safe though , lets see later when the eye is closer.
Hoping all's well there! Quite a breeze! Stay safe!
The Kiwis here in Hobart are keeping a keen eye on this system too!

Thanks guys.
At least the breeze has backed 40 degrees now but higher and heavy rain yet to come. The windows arent flexing today... spooky yesterday .Power is out in the region for who knows how long. Riada will be in more wind now but I read there's a tree down on the road on the way to her.
She's only 7 or 8 minutes away normally, we made 2 runs to check lines yesterday. Outermost pier so it works as a breakwater there was the odd wave breaking on it and it was undulating with the swells. Morning walk soon to see what else has fallen down ..maybe nothing. Hahaha ha.
Fingers crossed, eh!

A couple of hours cutting up an uprooted tree so I could drop the next one. It was waggling it's roots as well, better to send it where I wanted instead of onto the stripper shed. Stripper and tractor all fine.
Good so far. Good.

Supposed to build a little more tonight.

After a wild old night conditions eased this afternoon on the ranch although the heavy rain persisted. Wind has continued to strengthen and clocked around to the S and is forecast to peak from SW/W after midnight bloody typical.
No power for two days and possibly all of tomorrow no real drama as the wood fire has a wetback and the generator keeps the fridges humming.
One upside of Cyclone Gabrielle and global warming I might able to get a swing mooring for the Morby down in the back paddock.

There's another 3 threads in the bilge on the same subject, I'll just leave it at this.
Riada is fine but the southerly change left our marina finger like a driftwood beach. It is a superb marina with a terrific maintenance program and very professional management. All you can ask for really. Photo in the lull , it wasn't the eye but was like it. It came in hard from the SW after that, ie towards the camera.

That flotsam occurred after the 40 degree shift to the south from the SE.
8 trees down at our place, massive amounts of debris but no house damage for us or people damage in this region yet.
People we met while out in the boat this short trip just gone live at Muriwai though. Evidently they lost land but their house is safe. An emergency worker has lost his life there and I think there will be more than the 4 deaths total found pretty soon. I hope not.
What a summer, it's been awful.

I will add something on the subject. We just drove from our home in Northland to Auckland, significant delays , a tiring trip due to detours and stop go single lane traffic etc. What seems to have happened is that because the storm we ran from on the boat last week hit Northland first, and because that region and Auckland were already suffering badly from the floods a couple of weeks ago, much of the attention was on what would happen with cyclone Gabrielle and its effects on those places. There's been terrible destruction in parts of Auckland but in unexpected places , ( like Muriwai and Piha beaches for example). We were uncomfortable and weary from the wind for a few days, and lost a few trees, so we have got off easily.
It doesn't appear that people further south and east were fully aware of the dire danger they were in, and nor was anyone else. The destruction in Hawkes bay from flood damage let alone the wind is unbelievable, and I don't say that lightly..and although reports are coming in they are still dark for communications ( AFAIK). Flash floods .
It is very concerning and I repeat , I hope our WBF Mike and his in Napier are safe and secure.
edit edit I see Mike has checked in as safe on faceplant ,great news

Thanks for your thoughts and concerns, John, very much appreciated.
We are all good here, many are not unfortunately.
Never seen anything like it.
Have been eating like kings, consuming all the thawing meats and perishables.
Still in good spirits and supporting others where we can.
Just fired up Dads 80 year old kero Primus stove after a bit of reconditioning, so now he can make a cuppa for himself and Mum, as long as he has his cup of tea life is good.

A real hammering this summer, that's for sure! Again, very best wishes to all Kiwis over there and our hope that all stay safe! Sorry you have this to deal with!

Thanks Rick, this cyclone has really done a number on us.
The power came back on about 30 minutes ago, around our part of Napier anyway.
You could here the cheering going on around the neighbourhood when it happened.
My parents are still without but the situation seems to be slowly improving.
As I'm typing this there is the continual sound of helicopters flying about delivering, rescuing, observing and doing a fantastic job.
It will be a long road to recovery I think.

Summer arrived. This little schooner used to be a regular sight, was always very pretty and kept well. What a shock to see her like this.

It's always social, we seem to meet up with 3 or 5 boats each time out. 5 this time.

I had some nice shots of this boat sailing and at anchor ,perhaps 10 or 15 years ago. I don't recall all the details but first she was one boat and second she had the whole stern section added, keel lengthened etc, and turned into this delicate little schooner. I'm not sure how long she is, something in the 20's I think, so she's a miniature.. a scaled down boat.

Something special happened. More relevant to this thread than my Scale of the thing ( where perhaps by my own loose guidelines it should have gone).
anyway..

These are the preliminary drawings, in pencil, for the light displacement ketch Laurie Davidson designed in 1973. The boat was built over 1974 of cold moulded kauri and launched as a 1975 vessel.
Please don't keep us in suspenders! Did your builder do a Noel?

Make modifications you mean...? No , they were just the preliminaries for the actual drawings, offsets etc. A goldmine of data, displacement, sail area and ratios etc.
I had been told they were gone or didn't exist, my son located them and borrowed them for copying.
She wasn't built to rule but her IOR beam was noted as a nod to the day and in case she raced .
I love the ' Light Displacement Ketch' . In another document her designer called her ' a fast cruiser'.
All true to this day.
Lost then found! Excellent!

Isn’t there a sister-ship? Are they the same plans?
Near, Gareth, but I actually asked the boatbuilder if they were modified Riada moulds. They weren't, they were a whole new lofting.
Riada II was the boat I crewed on up to the islands back in 11 and 12. She's 5 years newer ,has a flatter run aft, a retrouse stern with inboard rudder and is a sloop. Very fast on a wave for 1980 , that flatter run picks her up and she surfs earlier than our boat.
Thanks for the photo mod P, no idea why my machine did that.
