Someone remove all the knives from the boat. Rope even...

For the last couple of months I've been telling people who are interested that I was concerned about the fact there have been no cyclones and that they'll be stacked up late in the season. But I hoped I would be wrong.
Such is our doom it seems.
On the positive side the sea temps are reported as dropping in the Islands so that means we should be reaching the end of it.

Saturday departure still looking pretty good, as long as nothing gets damaged on Friday!

Looks like some pretty strong headwinds.

South of the border hyar, Gareth. ( unless you see something I'm missing) Now we have Cyclone Ella moseying on around not quite sure where she's going or even whether she wants to be a named storm for very long. Donna is due on outa here tonight or tomorrow but Ella is thinking she might want to rain on our parade a bit longer.

So we are close to our 4 weather models coming to some sort of loose agreement ,but it seems not quite by the weekend.

Saturday on still looks okay but there's that stream coming in from the NE on Tuesday. I can't see east of Fiji by the way! Where are you planning to sail to first?

Cyclone ella is the issue now Rick. We could leave on the back of Donna and have some nice sailing but we could also run into the remains of Ella.
The Niua's are in it now. There just shouldn't be that activity in that area at this time of the year, historically.
Tonga via minerva is the plan.

Where is Ella? But yes, why go into such an unsettled pattern? I'd also wait until it all settles down - it's a holiday after all!

Ella is formed up between Samoa and Fiji. Cat 1 but still 65 odd knots. It shouldn't be there but guess what , it is.
Where will it go , mebee NW, mebee south and paste Fiji. That was the situation 10 hours ago and I haven't looked since but Newpotatoes must be getting some nasty weather.

These little cyclones are odd. This current Oz BOM chart shows what looks like a typical trades pattern to me yet there are still these little cyclones hanging around.

Guess there are far worse places to sit out waiting for a good weather window, which is much better than in the old days where we just sailed and hoped for the best.
Brings back memories of hanging around in Colon Panama. for a late Huricane followed by a large stationary front which once we made up our mind to leave dissipated after sailing 80 kn North ,followed by good trade winds to Jamaica while a number of boats following ran into some heavy stuff.

I'm not liking what I'm seeing. We could make a dash for it and probably be fine between the systems, but the fact is this is volatile weather for may. Sea temp in Tonga should be 28 but its been 32 up until very recently and now about 30, and that , right there is the problem. That is what is allowing these late cyclones to propagate.
A few boats have come back to NZ, there are 5 unhappy boatloads at minerva reef worried . One boat we know of doing a dash out of here tomorrow... fast 60 footer with a good crew compliment.

We're going to wait for this current rubbish to go through overnight and pop back out into the Bay for 3 days, re assess after that. Might have to catch more fush.

Really good plan. What do you gain by rushing? Another week and you're cruising!

I wish I was sailing around some NZ bay chasing fish .......

Next Friday's looking good! Maybe Thursday if the system moves a little ahead of the forecast.

Thats what we're hoping for, Rick. Nice day here after 2 of rain, still a gale warning though.

It has been blowing like hell up here in the Far North, I was thinking about you John, waiting it out. A mate of my brother's is in the same situation in Whangarei, but that has been his home port for the last few years. He is tossing up whether to head for the Bay of Islands as his first step, although it will only make around a day's difference to his total voyage.
There is nothing quite as permanent as a good temporary repair.

Quite right rather Sh--ty in them days.
This was in 89 just after Noriega was bombed by the Yanks . All banks still closed foreign yachts short on cash funds for transiting canal having to fly out of the country to pick up cash and with much seamen unemployment particularly in Colon which was a very dangerous place to visit. Many foreigners and GIS rolled in town after being dropped with a knife.

A few of us singlehanders did venture out one night choosing to party in the street with some local seafaring guys rather than the seedy girlie bars surrounding the YC.

Friday still looking good - plenty of pressure! You'll get ENE in a few days - is that likely to be a problem?

Yes, what a bummer! Where did THAT come from? You've certainly had a bad run this month! Let's hope June is much more settled!

Where are you hanging out JB? Must be getting frustrating, but I can’t imagine anywhere around there that I’d not be happy mooching around in for a forced break anyway.

Check JBs tracker. Filling the bay with tracks, like a dog pacing in a yard waiting for its owner to get home from work and take it for a walk.

Just looking at the BOM charts this morning JB, I can't see any storms developing this coming week. Looks like light to moderate SE to ENE through the week on the passage to Tonga.
