Default 2nd Annual Shop Talk and Messabout at Clint Chase's Shop

Invitation to Fall Shop Talk & Messabout in Portland, Maine

Please join me for the 2nd annual – “It’s a tradition now” – shop talk and messabout. This year we’ll welcome our guest designer/builder Walter Wales. Also with him will be WoodenBoat’s Associate Editor Karen Wales (Walter’s wife) and renowned illustrator Sam Manning and his wife Susan.

Walter is an acknowledged expert on the Marblehead Gunning Dory originally built by Will Chamberlain of Marblehead, Massachusetts. Sam illustrated John Gardner’s “Dory Book”
Walter and Karen will bring their Gunning Dory REPUBLICAN, built in 1960 by Capt Gerald Smith from Will Chamberlain’s molds.

Walter and Sam will talk about the history, design, construction, and use of this famous dory type. In addition to REPUBLICAN we’ll have a couple other dories on site to look at and discuss.

You can read about the Marblehead Gunning Dory in John Gardner’s books, “The Dory Book” and “Wooden Boats to Build and Use.”

Bring a boat because afterward we’ll head to East End for a sailing and rowing Messabout. Snacks and drinks provided in the shop, but bring a lunch.

WHAT: 2nd Annual Shop Talk & Messabout
WHERE: 25 Deblois Street Portland, Maine. Deblois is off Brighton Avenue.
WHEN: Saturday, Oct 23rd 11am. Messabout after lunch. Sunday rain date (stay posted on my blog for weather update)

Thanks for putting that up, Steven.

Michael Storer has been a huge catalyst for me and what I do and also for starting this event -- it is a tradition now. It dovetails nicely with a range of similar events through the year. Another one is the Short Ships Regatta.

    Clint,

I think it's great that you're carrying on and making a tradition of this event that started with Mik's visit. I've been thinking about doing the same on this coast. Your event might just spark me to follow through!

Ben, Bring the Ducker next time!

As a reminder, last year I had Michael Storer who was our inaugural speaker. He was doing a tour of the US and gave talks all over, including David G's shop in my sister city, Portland Oregon. Very fitting, isn't it David? I think you should do it and I'd be happy to lend a hand in cross promotion, etc. Michael Storer did record his talks and put together podcasts you can find on his podcast site.

We look forward to hosting Walter Wales and crew on the 23rd of October then going for a row/sail afterwards.

Dan it will be great to have another dory expert up! When you are here, you'll be able to see the Deblois St Dory, too.

I'm forwarding this to post to Rich Wills who is a dory fan. He has an old dory built by Landing School.

I've wondered too and came to two possible conclusions:
--Walter knows more about the Marblehead Gunning Dory than anybody currently alive in our wooden boat community...I am still a newbie by comparison so who am I to question
--it is a photo shoot and Karen and Walter wanted to look at each other while launching their new boat
--another possibility is that one of them has a bad neck for rowing and looking over one's shoulder a lot.

Fishermen also did a lot of rowing facing forward, often standing.

In addition to the Gunning Dory, we will have some other dory types. I will try to get one of the Beachcombers for folks to try on East End.

Less than two weeks away, Oct 23rd at my Deblois St Shop.

    Cheers,
    Clint

Callsign, I saw in the PM that you said Clint's Shoptalk was on Sunday. Sunday is the raindate, the talk is scheduled for Saturday.

That was fun seeing you in your GIS this afternoon. Too bad about your camera. Here are a few of our shots of you:

UGH SATURDAY SATURDAY Too much sun, not enough hydration, and general giddiness are to blame.

Thanks for the sail by Steve, and the pictures!

This is the part where we all imagine the pictures I took with my camera that did not take a salt water bath...

Here's a beautiful picture of Talisman soaring on a reach with full sails and fine spray enveloping her bow in rainbows and with harbor porpoises jumping gleefully in such great company:

Here's a great one of the dreaded Kraken climbing up the masts! Steven is heroically fighting it off with his machete and bull-whip! Go Steven go! ShaneFromMaine is at the helm loading the arquebus that Steven keeps below for such occasions:

Success! Steven has fought off the Kraken with the machete and bullwhip, ShaneFromMaine is still loading the arquebus and doesn't realize that this fight is over. Notice the sinister Kraken beak in Steven's left hand!

And finally, our Talisman's glorious return to port, with throngs of merry Portland citizens greeting their hero who saved their city once more! This is my favorite, because of all the buxom women in the foreground (psss don't tell me wife!):

YUP! Great afternoon, and those would have been all the great pictures I would have taken of Talisman had my camera not taken a salt water bath!

Actually, some good imagery there - kinda like reading the book instead of watching the movie....

The photos are not popping up for me. I'm sure they will.

    Some info:

    Directions: http://tinyurl.com/ClintShop

Parking: Deblois St is short but nice and wide with plenty of room on both sides for cars with trailers. You may also park on Longfellow which is perpendicular to Deblois at the top.

Lunch: Is not provided but please bring food for yourself. I will have cider and some yummy snacks for people. Bring water for on water activities.

Times: We'll try to start the talking part of the day at 11am. This is low key so if we are a little late, it's OK. However, we want to be sure there is time for a sail/row on East End

Messabout: We'll go to the Boat Ramp on East End shooting for 3pm. Directions from my house: http://tinyurl.com/EastEndBoat
We just stick close to the ramp and beach area. There is a nice dock for tying up and hanging out.

    Another shot from yesterday:

I think I'll bring my Harry Bryan Thistle on Saturday. I'll throw the Rushton Tyvek Batwing sail in the truck, too.

    weather looks good
I'm hoping to come up friday and launch for over night, can we park over night at the boat ramp at the promenade where we put in last year? is there another ramp that allows over night parking? Ill try calling PYS tomorrow and arrange for over night trailer storage, that would be ideal

The South Portland ramp allows overnight parking. Just across the harbor from PYS.

it's just going to get colder from here on out.
I'm not sure what our schedule for Sunday will be, really depends on how comfortable it is sleeping 2 aboard Peggy Bliss...!
    is anyone sailing Sunday?

It looks like Talisman will still be in the water. So we will be sailing on Sunday for sure. All will be welcome to come aboard and check her out. I can have her at the dock until about 4pm, then it might be too shallow and we'll have to take her back to her mooring. Or go for a sail.
