I am looking for plans or photos for construction of a boat similar to Elly as described in several articles in WoodenBoat over the years. Most recent article was a cover story in WB# 162. My attempts to reach a contact in Sweden have gone unanswered. William Gilkerson, the owner of Elly, has no suggestions other that the contact I tried in Sweden. There are two books about similar boats, Blixten and Kagen. Does anyone out there have a copy they might sell or loan. HELP

    Thumbs up

The following is a copy of a posting that Forum member Pekka Hutta made to the rec.boats.building news group not too long ago.

There are several plans for different koster designs at Axel Gustafsson's
boat designs http://surf.to/boat.design/ (straight link to the plans is
    http://home2.swipnet.se/~w-21404/boats/list.html )

In Finland there are several boatbuilders still building these. There is a
very famous boat series called "Scylla", wooden clincker-built boats,
which are a very succesfull combination of traditional Koster and North
Sea lifeboat by Colin Archer. There are over 70 of them built, the one at
the boatyard today is number 73.

There are three sizes of these Scylla-boats, from 8,7 m to 9,6 m. The
newest one, which is being built at the moment is 10,6 m long and the
    first of that size.

Unfortunately there is very few good photos of those boats in net, the
only ones that I know are at

    http://www.pss.fi/oxu/scylla.htm and
    http://www.puuvene.net/Lehti/1995-4/Nalle_Pu.html

The designer of these boats can be contacted at

    Sado Marin
    Nyberg Bjorn
    Lankoorintie 106
    29120 VERKKORANTA
    Finland

As many old-timers, Bjorn Nyberg doesn't have an e-mail address. He and
his son build two boats a year and another builder Ismo Lilja one boat per
    year.

A Koster is quite common boat around the Finnish coast and there are at
least thirty-something boatbuilders around the Finnish coastline, who
    could build you one.

I hope this was of some help.

    Best regards,

    Pekka Huhta
editor of Puuvene.net, a Finnish online woodenboat magazine at
    http://www.puuvene.net
(unfortunately the magazine is only in Finnish, but have a look at the
    photos anyway...)

    What Dave said.

I've been on a long, fruitless search for a boat like Elly for a long while myself. I think that Gustaffson's plans are the closest, but not exact. If you're a better builder than I am, you could get a copy of "Wooden Boat Designs" by Christian Nielsen, it's all Danish workboats but many of them are very, very much Elly. No offsets but lots of linesplans and a few construction details.

Here's another post to look at for more info:

    Elly post
"And look at Elias Wonder. Yeah, take a gander at that buzzard. Forty years ago he was happy, generous, charitable, tall, dark and handsome. Then he took up the fly rod. Now consider him. Uglier than fresh road kill. Evil-eyed, cantankerous, sullen, mean. An anti-social misfit that causes a groundswell of spleen wherever he goes."

The Internet Wayback Machine sometimes has them.

www.archive.org ; note that you enter the address of the page you want, not a search string, and highlite the part of the address after the h t t p : / / as that's already in the find box. You're then given a page showing all of the pages that it knows that were at that address, and when.

    Sadly, it doesn't save everything.

The Northwest School of Wooden Boat Building built a replica of Bill Gilkerson's Elly. Woodenboat Volume 177 page 17. The boat was launched last spring. They build the hull deck and house. I understand that the interior hasn't been finished for the present. Designer is Jim Franken. I don't have an address for the designer. the Northwest School of Wooden Boat Building has a web site with additional information. Swedish Kog

See if you can find a copy of "Allmogebatar, Svenskt batbygge under hundra ar" by Alvar Zacke and Magnus Hagg. It was published by Natur och Kultur in 1973.
This book has boats ( drawings, construction details, some lines) from all over Sweden. If you can give me a type (for example, "snippa" or "eka") and a snail mail address I'll try to find it and copy any lines, etc. for you. Har det so bra.

I really hate to say this, but the ELLY, as beautiful as she is is actually nothing special over here. This kind of boat is not a swedish invention but a typical boat-design throughout the whole Baltic, Snekke, Smakke, Sjekte, Snekkerstenjolle, Shokker....all of those designs are more or less based on viking-boat designs.

A Smakke-Jolle (actually the sail is called a Smakke meaning square cloth

    An Kadre-jolle

This is the ELSE AF SLETTEN, a Bornholm Heringboat. She is about the size of ELLY

This is the VAAR. She is cravel-built but nevertheless has the same lines as ELSE (except being much more narrow). VAAR is a Bornholm Salmoncutter

    Martin,

I don't know how I missed this thread but it's full of cousins to my Sjogin. Maybe you can shed some light her ancestry. Based on your comments above she seems to be a common type in the Baltic. Any thoughts as to her designer?

Here's a picture of Sjogin and a link to my first post describing her:

Thanks for posting all of these great double ender pictures here and on the Elly thread.

Jim Franken of Port Townsend drew his interpretation, and a boat was built by the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding a few years ago.

    Perhaps you can contact them.
