Notre Dame holds future of major college sports

It's a difficult chore, determining whether to look at Notre Dame as a program with unprecedented financial leverage and power in college football, or as a program in many ways being held hostage by a system changing for the worse.

As a supporter of one of the schools with the greatest tradition in college football, I understand some of the angst that Notre Dame fans are dealing with. I still blame all of this on the old USA Today newspaper. This generation lives in snippets, and it demands to be entertained at a snap of it's fingers. Baseball has that crazy extra innings rule and a pitch clock. Soccer is rising in popularity because you pretty much know that two hours after it starts it will end. And television, and more importantly, streaming services, rule the day.

Whatever happens in college football will not be decided by the NCAA. It will not be decided by the coaches, the AD's or even the presidents. It will be decided by the guys who run Fox, espn, Apple, etc. And we will pay for it all, through our subscription fees, and through a loss of so many traditions that have meant so much for so long.

    Nebraska? On what planet?

They're in the 'prove it' year, or suspect we'll see some 'changes' at the top. Top 4? No. Hope to be rated by year -end? Yes.
There's a lot of things they didn't tell me when I signed on with this outfit....

I’m so not a football guy. It’s served me well as a young man invited over to football parties. I would chat up all the frustrated football widows and …… well they seemed appreciative

That was until I wasn’t invited to anymore football parties.

Dunno. But in his first post, he pulls up a thread that hasn’t seen daylight in over a week, quotes something completely irrelevant and comments with a nothing-burger.

Should be a good game. I'm looking forward to seeing what this version of the Ducks looks like. Has the new coaching staff managed to put together a team that will actually utilize the talent that both Cristobal & Lanning brought in... or are they still a ways away? I'm hopeful, but just put a sheckel on the Dogs. One of my more rabid homer Duck-fan buddies even offered odds. Couldn't pass it up.

Also mildly curious to see how seamlessly the Dogs have reloaded after a wad of players moved on. And whether they'll 'overlook' the Ducks. Could happen... the SEC is notoriously arrogant

I don't think so. Wasn't it the 'Walmart EasyFlush Bowl'??

What about 'bama? Is this gonna be another 'rebuilding' year. Like last year... when they slid all the way down to simply playing in the NC game?

    de nada!

I honestly have no clue what to expect from my Duckies this year. Pundits have them anywhere from playing in a semi-final to finishing 4th in the Pac12. I'm very curious... and perfectly willing to give Dan Lanning a year to get his feet under him.

Militaristic parody thing. Most boringest game in the universe.

Seems like stopping the play regularly for commercials is the most important part.

Rugby's way more fun to watch. The players actually have to think on their feet.

#5 Notre Dame is playing #2 Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio this Saturday. I'll be watching.

There are a surprisingly large number of programs who have ridden an illustrious history way farther than was warranted. ND is one. USC. Nebraska. Etc. And many of them are still recruiting at a high level.

I am not, in fact. Seattle Seahawks are gonna be 5-12 this year, get a high draft pick ( c'mon Russ, tank with Denver ), and get a fine young QB in next year's draft. Then things will upswing.

The College Football Playoff's board of managers will hold a virtual meeting on Friday that could accelerate playoff expansion as early as 2024 if the 11 presidents and chancellors who comprise the sport's most powerful group vote on a format and unanimously agree to it, sources confirmed to ESPN on Wednesday.
