    More Gruden --

    https://www.yahoo.com/sports/jeff-fi...032622502.html

Among the many awful things uncovered in former Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden's emails on Monday was the unsubstantiated assertion that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell had pressured then-St. Louis Rams head coach Jeff Fisher into drafting Michael Sam, the first openly gay draftee in league history.
Fisher's Rams drafted Sam, the reigning co-SEC Defensive Player of the Year, out of Missouri in the seventh round of the 2014 draft, a few months after Sam publicly came out as gay.

A day after the publication of Gruden's years-old emails and his speedy resignation, Fisher emerged from the coaching wilderness — he currently works as an adviser for Tennessee State's program — to bluntly refute Gruden's claim that Sam's sexuality had anything to do with the Rams' decision to draft him:

And the Ducks go to 5-1. Barely able to get out of their own way most of the game, and yet able to turn it on just enough when needed.

why the persistent lack of motivation to win by the ducks?
is it just a lack of competition inherit in pac 12 football? and they play down to such? discipline issues?
they sure did play up in the horseshow

See my previous comments on youth.

Despite my frustration with the team in that regard, watching some of the individuals was a real treat. Dye as the primary runner. Brown when he decided to get serious. And Thibodeaux's grace and power was a thing of beauty --

    Wrong again.

I'll give the Ducks this much credit - Cal is a better team than their record indicates. If you've watched their games, they show it. They just haven't figured out how to finish. Lotsa close losses.

OTOH - one could argue either way with Oregon. Lotsa close wins... TOO close. And a stupid loss against Stanford. But they show flashes of being elite. Until they make that the norm, instead of a shiny tool they pull out only when forced to... they won't be a playoff team. They may continue to put up a good record this year, but I'm more interested to see what they do next year, or the year after, when they have a more dynamic qb, and all that young talent has more snaps under their belts. Cristobal's got some growing to do also.

I think that was expected. It certainly has been a bit chaotic this season.

I assume 'bama will take care of business. How often does Saban lost two in a row? And Georgia showed they're not all defense. And 56 points from Cincinnati. I've never followed them, are they really that good?

It's just the ducks, they don't know up from down. Civil War should be quite interesting. Beavers will be partying in the duck house this year, will hate to see all of those elite fowl fans getting disappointed.

I suspect the Ducks dropped because they once again failed to look solid against weak competition.

The Beav really have made a big step forward this year. I think Smith was an excellent hire, and he might just turn into a top notch coach... who stays. That's the key. Not since Dee has a top coach stayed.

True! Andros used to show up for post game parties. He was involved in the community.

I enjoyed Smith's response when reporters inquired about him talking to USC, "Go Beavers".

Death of a Tree: Roots of a Rivalry

The poisoning of Auburn University's famed oak trees by University of Alabama fan Harvey Updyke made national news. Mo explores the legendary rivalry between these two college football powerhouses and the line between fandom and fanaticism - and talks with the man whose loyalty pushed him over the edge

It is possible to take football too seriously. Failure to maintain a certain level of perspective is a psychological malady. But it has long been said that, for certain areas of the country, and for certain segments of society, football is more like a religion than a sport.

    Seriously.

Oregon wins... again. Oregon makes it as hard on themselves as they can manage... again.

So I'm just gonna go ahead and make my prediction now. The Ducks will be in the playoff this year. They will win the remainder of their games by an average of 1.3 points. Enough teams ahead of them will lose to allow them to rise in spite of themselves. Today's Examples: Penn State; Okie State; and 'bama's upcoming loss to Tennessee <G>

Who’d a thunk it? Two undefeated, top 10 teams playing for the Paul Bunyan trophy? Mind you, neither team was ranked at the beginning of the year.

Hell, even I have had to dial back my “UM is constantly overrated” rhetoric. Their front 7 are good. No ands, its, or buts about it. They win with solid defense and 250 yards of rushing every game, but I don’t think they’ve faced a run defense like MSU’s yet this season.

I still say that MSU is punching above their weight this season, but they’re 7-0 and have players with big play potential on every snap. They have 9 scoring plays of over 50 yards this season. Should be a great game.

And I will be one of them. As long as there’s a four team playoff, no conference should be allowed to send more than one team. You’ve had an entire season to sort yourselves out. Send your best.

Not too worried though. Exempting their slow start, OSU is rapidly setting the standard for the Big10 yet again. This weekends game amounts to a battle for 2nd place in the Big10 East.

Speaking of the Big10, weren’t you all high on Big10 football only a page back?

    Slow your roll, mi amigo.
