Default Are You Ready For Some... Football?

I know it seems too early to be thinking about it, but Rivals.com recently ranked the top 120 college football teams for the upcoming season.

'bama is picked #1 - followed by Ohio State, Boise State, Oregon & Nebraska. As an Oregon fan, going into the season with an otherwise strong team, but without a veteran quarterback... I gotta think that's a little optimistic. But then, Chip Kelly's offensive scheme may just be one where you can get away with it.

Isn't soccer called football for good reason?

Too early to be thinking about football? C’mon man!
Usually by this time of year the wife and I are jonesing so bad that we have to rent football movies just to calm the jitters temporarily. (Blind Side with Sandra Bullock was well worth while by the way.) During the off season, which we bitterly refer to as the Dead Zone, she’ll frequently catch the dog and I in the back room watching Arena League and re-runs of last years Gator games!

So yea, we’re more than ready here.

Here's the AP version - Alabama on top, and Oregon @ #11. That's a bit more realistic, I'd think:

Tech got ranked above UGA in the AP and Coaches' polls. I'll have to point that out to my sister.

David, you know your ex-qb is at Ole Miss now? Supposedly he is on a very short leash, but with Houston Nutt who knows what that means.

We had a great college football thread last year that ran for about six months. There are a few fans here.

As much as I love Alabama I will go ahead and say that we will not win the national championship this year unless a whole lot of things come together for our young team. Yes we have a senior quarterback and left tackle, but most of the team will be sophs or juniors with a few freshmen thrown in for good measure. We play Penn State, Florida and Auburn at home and Arkansas, South Carolina, Tennessee, and LSU on the road. Does that sound like a schedule someone is going to breeze through? And then, if we win the west again, we are going to have to play someone like Florida AGAIN in Atlanta.

If I had to make a prediction I would pick Ohio State and Boise in the BCSNCG. I keep hearing all of this stuff about 'one game seasons'. Well, we darn sure don't have a one game season kind of schedule.

Oh yeah, Boise. If Boise gets by Virginia Tech in Landover (a big 'if', but still) then the only other even remotely difficult games for them are at home against the Beavers and then against Nevada. They aren't ranked #3 for no reason.

Some American football sounds great. It's a bummer they play on weekends, as I really have better things to do than sit around the house.

It would be nice if Steve Sarkasian can continue to improve the U/Washington Huskies. Rose Bowl?

And on a tangent, it'll be REALLY interesting to see what Pete Carroll does with the Seahawks.

I listened to Ted Miller yesterday on espn radio review the Pac 10. Miller used to be the Auburn beat writer for the Mobile Press, but now covers Washington for the Seattle paper. He said his favorites were 1. Oregon, 2. Oregon State, and 3. USC (though they are ineligible). He had Arizona, Stanford and Cal a bit below those three. That has UW still in the bottom tier even with the potential #1 draft pick in next year's draft at qb. If the guy is that good I'd have to give the Huskies more of a shot than bottom tier. College football is a coach and quarterback-driven game.

I kind of suspect that Washington will rise again. Steve S. seems like a good coach (time, of course, will tell us more), and they have a proud history.

I guess this is as good a time as any for my annual "why is the media given any input what-so-ever in determining the actual outcome of the bowl system?" rant.

Honestly, so long as they are going to keep picking the same teams year in and year out at the top based on the number of fans they have, (People want to read/watch articles about their teams, which only makes sense to run when they're relevant. And since we're selling ads, we've got to have readers/viewers.) this will always be a joke.

#41 University of Michigan. Really? The excerpt states that they've only won 8 games in the last two years and that Rodriguez needs wins to keep his job.

How is this justification for a top 50 (or top 100 , for that matter) rank?

    Oh well.....1023 days and counting.

Most of us football fans are secure enough in our manhood and sexuality for there to be absolutely no issue with whatever it is you're having problems with. Sorry your struggling here. . .

Well, the buzz is that QB Jake Locker is Heisman-quality, so we'll see how far he and the coach can take the Huskies.

Not very far this year, I fear. There is not supporting cast to go with that all-star qb.

I'm ready, not sure about the high school football team, but I'm ready. I mean the first series of the first game and you have the ball on the opponent 35 yard line and it is fourth and inches and you snap it out of the shotgun? Where in the world did that come from? And how do you throw too high to a 6'-5" wide reciever on a screen pass, not once but all night long?

And don't underestimate the Vols. I know, new coach and all that, but it is the Vols and we will play to win.

And I'm really ready for the third year of Matt Ryan with the Falcons. I think we are going to make some noise this year.

I haven't watched much ESPN or read many magazines on it this year. It wouldn't do much good anyway, none of them like the Falcons or the Vols and I'm really tired of hearing about Farve.

Chadster, espn and the magazines all agree that even Vanderbilt will beat Tennessee like a drum this year. Sorry, buddy. You guys can always look forward to women's basketball .

that too!! plus tennis. The Ducks know how to play tennis? I don't see the Ducks in the tennis rankings. Maybe next year.

I don't know nuttin' boout no tennis. Is that a sport? The Duck's other great claim to athletic fame is track. Sure ain't men's basketball. But, hey... maybe with a new coach, and brand new arena... maybe we could... ah - nevermind (mumble, moan, mumble).

Down in the SEC, when the Ducks do come up in conversation it often has to do with the snazziness of their Nike uniforms; other than that they don't get talked about much.

Is there a better QB than John Brantley anywhere, please stand up? Gators are loaded with the talent and depth again. Like Brantley was last year, the gators have reserves that can beat most other teams. I feel sorry for the second and third teams because they could be starting at other schools.

    Remember the diamond plate design?

(And seriously...U of M at #41? SI has them picked to go 2-6 in the Big 10!!! )

MSU: 8-5 with one of the losses in a bowl game in which they were misplaced against a far better team.
