Default Grey Seal a little progress

Her motor well and hatch: The hatch cover is canvas, same as her deck, with Black Locust trim; sort of a "practice".

    And a cardboard rudder:

The black line is the designers rudder edge, I decided to add to it due to extent of prop cut out.
The hardware is from Classic Marine UK.

Looking very nice. I'm not sure of the scale, but that looks like a big reach from the step in the rudder to the deck. (Assuming that's a self-rescue step, and not something else.) But even so, it would be a big help!

The level of craftsmanship and finish is really starting to show. Nice job.

Looking fantastic! Count me in as someone very interested in all aspects of this build – prices on hardware and such would be great information to have. keep up the great work. I think is was a good idea to give the rudder a little more bite.

Photos show some wonderful craftsmanship but I'm a little concerned about the camber on the cockpit hatch. You have to step on that everytime you enter or exit the cabin, no? When wet won't that be a slippery spot? Especially when heeled over? Shouldn't that be hatch be almost flat?

It's 15 oz painted canvas; highly textured.

Actualy if the boat is heeled to starboard you could step slightly to the left and the hatch
would be presenting a somewhat level surface

Nice progress Gert. What kind of engine will you use? I've often thought if I had the gumption to build something in this size range, it would be cool to drop in an etek electric motor, with batteries as low as possible in the hull for extra ballast.

Looking great Gert, as usual!! But what is the cockpit hatch actually for? I guess it's space for the engine but there doesn't seem to be enough space for that there, or is that just a quirk of the photography? I can't remember the setup on Rob's boat (Huon Seal) well enough to make a comparison. Rick

The motor compartment is 34" wide X 57" long.

The well opening is 21 1/2" X 34 1/2" and 20 1/2" from the top of the # 6.5 floor to the underside of the "lid".

The lid can also easily adjust upwards 2" if need be.

I modeled full size and "installed" three different motors before dimensioning this hatch detail.

    It should be fine.

Rob's cockpit was boxed out for quarter berths, this one isn't; I'm leaving the cockpit open.

This will make it much easier to work on the motor becase it's not in the bottom of a 3' deep well.

What was it Thumper's mom said?

Thanks Gert, looks good to me! Not sure about your reference to Thumper's mom though - did you think I wasn't being nice? Sorry if I gave that impression - certainly wasn't my intention! I'm just interested to see how it all fits together. Rick

Very nice. But I'd suggest a timber rudder. Even with epoxy that cardboard will go soft eventually;0
