Atkins Lena & Richard b chute , V bottom skiffs

Back in the day,atkin drew a design called Lena,which was a v bottom skiff, similar to the "new jersey" style. Another design called the Richard B Chute, seems to be the same hull,with a marconi rig and centreboard added. Firstly, soryy i cant post pictures of the boats concerned,but im sure someone on the forum will be able to do so.

My question is;

How well will a boat primarily designed for power, behave as a sailing boat?
It seems to me that despite the advantages of that long flat keel,there will be considerable drag also? Hopefully one of the better informed designers can comment on this

Atkin quotes a speed of 12mph with a 45-50hp in Lena, and 9mph for the sail version with a 5hp motor,im not sure how reliable these figures are.

there was also a larger version @28ft called the two brothers, i like the design,but for something to be trailered,its a little too large in the beam for Europe.

Any thoughts welcome, at present im more interested in the hull shape and its ability as a sail boat.I dont know if any of these were actually built. Cheers

an update from some further research. Back in 1939,The Matthews Company at Port Clinton ,Ohio; were building 25ft skiffs similar to Richard B Chute,except for a greater draft of 2ft 3 in. Atkins comments that no centreboard was added,nor was it needed. Over 100 of these boats were built.
Atkins drew also a much larger version called Sunnie,at 35ft.

The large hollow box keel,allowing lower engine placement,seems to be a feature some designers are picking up on today. I dont see any reason why this skiff hull form would not be a practical propostion for a small motor sailer,that needs access to shallow water.

I only seek clarification on the merits or drawbacks of this particular hullform, Unfortunately none of these boats feature on the atkins web site,but are in the Motorboating design series books. Any comments? Cheers

Same thing happens to most of my requests for opinions of designs. I think the NA's are often reluctant to comment on the designs of others and most of the rest of us just don't have any real knowledge about many of these older designs.

fair comment. I wouldnt have thought that asking for "an opinion" as to wether or not these hull shapes would perform under sail would be asking too much. I may make up some scale models and try some tests myself. Cheers
