    Default 35-40 Motorsailer Design Wanted

Can't find a motorsailer in this range that fits my criteria. Problem is I really want a slick fast cruiser. That Sparkman Stephens boat for free would have been perfect. But my wife doesnt like been heeled over and sprayed all the time. She would like a trawler. So I'll sacrifice speed to at least get sail. Must be capable of motoring maybe at 7 and carry enough fuel for some distance. Shallow draft or centerboard (this knocks out a lot of designs I like) and yet still salty enough for some ocean passages.

I like the Burnett designs but the keels are too deep. Gartside is too trawler looking for me. I like Smaalders' Kahuna but she looks like too much a light fast boat for my wife's comfort.

Maybe it just isn't out there.

All too often, large sailing yachts capable of an ocean passage are restricted ti deeper water when they arrive at their destination. The SD40 is a shallow draft cruising sailboat that will be at home exploring, and will have the protected end of the anchorage to herself when she arrives. The hull shape and ballast ratio combine to produce a stable hull that is capable of offshore passages.

Construction is tack and tape plywood and epoxy. Steel construction is possible. Plans include: materials, lines, construction, and sail plan.

May I make a suggestion.......go to Chesapeake Marine Design and look under the headings and click on larger than 30 feet, go down a bit and find a boat called Little Island Trader......take a close look at that.......now go to the next few down and youll find one at 36 feet and one at 39 feet, called power cruisers.
Imaginethe Little Island Trader stretched lengthwise and beamwise to the dimensions of the larger boats...using a Beta Marine engine. At 6 nots you could do 3500-4000 miles, less if you want to go faster, with sufficient power to carry 3 8D house batteries, 9each 120 watt kyocera solar panels will fit on the overhead.....9 times 120 watts is over 1 kilowatt per hour and you could run a small airconditioner on that, and reefer/fridge...use sail when you're not in a hurry and 5 knots is enough, heavy enough to be really comfy, queen forward with 1/2 bath, dinette makes into a double for guests and a fuel bath with shower in the wheelhouse.....you get the idea.

WTH! I posted a reply but don't see it. I'll try again.

JIm--Thanks. That boat really fits the bill. I looked at the CMD site several times but somehow missed it. Ordered the study plans.

Chuck--Thanks. My wife would love those boats but she is going to have to let me have something less trawler-like.

I have quite a bit of time to chew on this. Still finishing my 30' Chris Craft restore but may be starting next summer if all goes well.

CMD says 4-6 dollars per pound to build. Is it really that much? $120,000 to build the 40' Shallow Draft boat? Do they mean they would build it for that much? lol. Could buy used for much less (if I could find one).

Yes, it really could cost that much. And unless you can hire pros to build it for you you are looking at ten years of crushing work. It can stop being fun after a while. It may be more of a compromise than either you or the mrs have in mind. Much better to buy used if you could only find something close to what you're after.

Yikes. I'm not sure I could justify that--dollars and time. I enjoy builidng and have mostly had fun with the restoration I am doing now but waiting years and years to enjoy the boat may not be the best path. I am still interested though and maybe I will stumble across a project someone else started that will suit the bill. I know of a couple of power boats halfway done but no sailing cruisers that would suit me. No hurry as I said above. Now--off to find the referenced build thread . . .

If you'd consider scaling back a bit the Hartley 28 can be built as a centerboarder with under three feet draft

at $6 per pound figure $2 for the hull and deck, $2 to finish out the interior etc, and $2 to finish the standing and running rigging, Then another $1 per pound to outfit the boat for basic sailing, anchors, life jackets, radios etc.
