    Nice boats, but why are they called sampans? I thought a sampan was a blunt-bowed boat, similar to a scow or punt. (The name "sampan" comes from a Chinese word meaning "three planks" -- the bottom and two sides.)

    aloha, over here in hawaii sampans have always been associated with this style of boat. havn,t done any research on them..derrick

    Whoever told you that was misinformed.

    These are modern style fishing boats.
    I love the smell of fresh cut plywood in the morning.

    aloha, over here in hawaii since at least 1930 , these boats have been called hawaiian sampans..go to google search.. type in hawaiian sampan, and viola the info will come up..the site is http\\www.hanahou.com,, they are unique to hawaii.. most of these boats that I have put up are old not modern..derrick

    These may not be authentic sampans as they were originally designed in Japan, but are all to some extent evolved from the original craft.
    Read the article about the Kula Kai, it is full of good information in how the design evolved in Hawaii.
    What we today call a real sampan is a full displacement hull, narrow and deep with a very sharp entry and a chine that dips quite deep through the center of the arc. The wide gunnel is also common to the species, as is the overhanging cabin roof.
    I was surprised to see my own boat pictured in here, as its only sampan feature is the high sharp bow. It is fiberglass with a warped deadrise semi-planing hull, but I guess it carries the "sampan" look to some extent.
