Default Coelan clear polyurethane wood coating

    http://www.premapro.com/tp_coelan.htm

Found a US supplier, anyone use it and could share how it worked out for them?

This is not a poly varnish but a rubberized clear coating with UV protection built in.

Coelan is spoken of well here

I used it on a customer's boat a couple of years ago. It was on a teak cockpit sole that was leaking onto the engine. It worked just as acvertised.

Lots of info online about this product. It was included in the Classic Boat multi-year varnish test and I think it did fairly well, but produced some darkening effects.

A forumite who has used Coelan in his boat to a high degree of satisfaction is Mr Andrew Craig-Bennett of the UK.

I recall him commenting that it is relatively high-priced but does perform as advertised.

Mr ACB used to log-in more frequently but as of late, occassionally.

I just got off the phone with them. they say after 10 years the gloss 'might' be less shiny. then you would just reapply 2 layers of gloss.
The original coating though really never degrades and you would never have to take it back to wood, unless water damages the underlying wood. He also claimed water would move out from the wood thru the finish, yet not move back into the wood.
He says Coelan colored wood will not change color in the sun, looks like varnish but lasts extremely long time.
The gloss is non slip, the matte is slightly slippery when wet.
Cost for an area of 5 feet by 13 feet is around 200$ for everything

They want all the coatings off the wood to start.
You then use a colored primer, red for mahogany and yellow for everything else.
Then you take the top coat gloss and mix a color into this if you wish. They have a rainbow charts of colors to pick
You paint on 4 to 5 coats waiting for it to set between coats. You can lightly sand between layers if bugs etc... got in the finish.

It must be thinned with a solvent as it is so thick in the can if you turn it upside down its like thickened honey.
They also are having a time keeping up with demand so its 2 to 3 weeks before you can get it.
Final film thickness is desired to be 1mm.
surface feel is fairly hard, not rubbery yet the stuff has 300% elongation.

I have it on Athaena and it is amazingly tough stuff.

Have a look at the Classic Boat reviews. If you don't mind the price and you're not fixed on using a traditional product it's definitely worth considering.

    Manufacturer copies of articles

Electronic version of magazine click on "Inside" you get three free zooms, go to page 60 under the flexible polyurethane heading.
