There are very few days like this. Sailboats of many past generations and hundred year old working boats, Schooners, yawls, gaffs, sloops, birds, bears and whale boats racing to Marin, ducking near the Golden Gate Bridge, flying potatoes and broken rigging, roaring in "the Slot" along the San Francisco waterfront, pounding the chop to Richmond and wringing out the tenths at Treasure Island.

It's so good, it feels as well be one's birthday and Christmas into one.

This will be our first MM regatta, and are we psyched!! We collared some old sailing buddies for crew and intend to sail hard and party harder.

So far the only regret is that Santana, Bogart and Bacall's old boat will not be racing.

It is an amazing regatta. Make sure you go to the luncheon on the 21st at the St. Francis. Get first crack at this years shirt, pick up the flag and get your racing packet. Make sure you introduce yourself around. Its a lively fun group with good outings from now till the end of summer.

Yeah, Santana is a good boat. But then there are many great boats like ours in the bay. You'll be amazed at the the love and admiration seen in these wooden vessels.

The Master Mariners Luncheon is today at the St. Francis Yacht Club. Its a great event in support of San Francisco Bays maritime history and the wooden boats that sail the waters.
Starts at 11:30. I look forward to seeing those great folks there.

Master Mariners Regatta is this weekend.

We should have clear skies and fair winds. Be sure to see the gaff rigs and schooners race down the Slot along the San Francisco water front. It is something every classic boat lover should see at one of the most beautiful and challanging locations to sail, race or watch.

Stand tall ye Sailors! Watch out for that incoming potato. Pipe in with your family and friends at the Encinal yacht Club to greet and celibrate among the Master Mariners fleet. Music and laughter goes late into the night. The beer is always cold and the golden pink salmon dinner hot. The cake is bonus!

Regatta starts at 12 with the Alma and Bears!

Things are a bit different this year. Marconi 3 and 4 are running the 12.8 course along with the Gaff 3s and Bear boats. For the big schooner class as well as well as the Gaff 1 and 2 run about 1.4 nm more to South Hampon shoals for a nautical distance 14.2 nm. Speedier Marconi 1 & 2, along with the birds and lapworth 36s will do a bit more on the forth and fifth legs for 15.6 mn. The Ocean Classes including the Farallon Clipper stretch out farther at legs 4,5 & 6 for a course of 17 nm.

In my opinion, there are five great places on land to see these historical boats underway and racing. The St. Francis is a good bet to catch them at line up. The second would be at Pt. Cavallo in Marin. The tide coming in and channel currents above 3 knots, count on a few captains riding the counter currents. The next mark at Blackaller can be hit by a strong arm throwing a potato from the Chrissy Field beach. You'll get some great photos of the boats and the Golden Gate there. Believe it or not, pier 39 could give you a great vantage point where you will see crew change sails and hunker down for the angel island blast. Finally down by the finish line in the lee of Treasure Island, watch the boats take the class or buckle down thier final position.

Does anyone know if a 39' cutter called FREELANCE sailed? We lost out on buying her about thirty years ago when we were considering going a-voyaging for a while.

Looks like a perfect day. I was out on the other side of Angel Island...hardly any wind. Would have headed to the central bay but I had to be home early...

RB(post #10) Freelance did not sail, but she is looking good! The current owner has gone after her in a big way and it shows, perhaps we will see her at the boat show later in the year...Cheers, BT

Freelance was at the MMBA wooden boat show last year, but I don't think Rich sails/races it very often.

Are the photos you guys posted (Ted and Norm/Karleen) okay to use in The Shellback newsletter that we are putting together tonight if we give you credit?

    Thanks,
    Ariane
