Default need a little help here...building a farm gate

all I need is a pic of one I like and I can use that to build a 14 foot gate...after searching for a while, all I can find is businesses wanting to sell me gates or gate kits...not what I want

    anybody got any ideas?

    I think I remember it...

what I'm looking for is function and nothing decorative...I'm just trying to beat the price of a steel gate and I like wood better...my labor will be free on this

will use treated lumber except the top rail (some horses tend to crib and I don't want them chewing the treated stuff)

Why pressure treated? I'd use Pine with a White Oak cap rail.

Pine won't rot if you keep it off the ground. PT is heavy and ugly

Gates are easy once you've learned to weld.
Even when they work, they don't work well. I blame engineers.
The only thing engineers have done to the toaster in the last 80 years is make it disposable. I think it applies to a lot of things

The problems with a wide farm gate are twofold, hinging and diagonal support. With this in mind, the first problem to tacle is finding suitable hinges. The diagonal support is usually a solid metal rod with nuts on each end running from the top of the hinge side stile to the bottom of the opposite stile. If you can make the hinge post and hinge stile taller than the gate itself, you will have given the structure a better configuration to resist sagging, as the hinges can be spread apart and the diagonal is steeper.

CCA is just fine for makeing a utilitarian gate, through bolting would be the best method of joining. It doesn't always have to be a work of art.

First, find some suitable hinges and a steel rod. The hinges have to be pretty heavy and the rod about a half inch diameter.

This one would make for a good weekend project:

I love Popeye's pic especially because it shows the value of square section end, top and bottom beams and it has fascinating engineering.

The big challenge in a large gate is to prevent warping. On Dad's gates, we put a brace wire in between paired down diagonal planks on each side of the horizontals. This enabled us to make non-warping 16' gates with lighter planks.

Lotta ways to skin this cat.

you could probably come up with a simple bracing rig without too much effort

coupla tangs , cable and turnbuckle

you guys are sailors , right ?

The traditional Kiwi farm gate is all made from roughsawn 5"x1" or so, and the components are bolted together. Short doublers are added where the hinges bolt through on the top and bottom rails. a 4"x1" is nailed on its flat across the top to add stiffness.

There is nothing quite as permanent as a good temporary repair.

Use an upside down wine bottle for the bottom bearing. It will work like a jeweled watch...
