Default Alaska Plywood and Lumber Supplier.

Howdy all, this is my first post here, so a brief intro. I live in Valdez AK and have built both a log house and a S&G kayak.

Moving on, I'm making plans to build a bigger vessel over the next few years for use in Prince William Sound.

I'll be needing a fair bit of 1088 ply, fir/spruce, a small bit of hardwood, and a lot of epoxy and fiberglass. All of these are easy enough to acquire down south, and easy enough to get up here - if you have the $$ to ship them.

I don't. Other than Superior Hardwood up in FBNKS, have any of you other Alaskans found a local source for the above materials?

We get our marine ply from Hardware Specialties in Anchorage. In fact, we have an order in with them now. They also stock any hardwood you would need, as well as the fir/spruce you may be looking for. They are a good place to do business with. They don't carry the marine ply in stock, but will special order it for you. You can also get marine ply from Spenard Builders but it will be Fir and the quality varies.

You could also order from Edensaw in Port Townsend. The problem with that is you have to arrange for shipping to get it up here. They will deliver to your shipper at no charge (Tacoma, Seattle, etc.) but getting an accurate price beforehand from a shipper (like Pacific Alaska Forwarding or Lynden, etc.) is often difficult so we just go ahead and use Hardware Specialties since they already have other loads coming North. You probably end up at the same price and have less headache. Hope that helps...

Thanks cmorse, I'll send them my list and see what kind of quote I can get. This is exactly the kind of lead I was looking for.

If you ever get into the FBNKS area superior hardwood has a similar setup; good quality materials for boatbuilding, but special order only.

I'll stay away from spenard and the fir plywood.

Any other anch idea's for 1088 Okume out there?
