Default Moving - Free Hartley 18

I'm getting ready to move and am giving away a Hartley 18 trailer sailer as she will not fit well in the next phase of my life.

She's been out of the water for ~10 years and shows all the signs of not changing blue tarps often enough, tho she was pretty well ventilated, tilted stern down with drain plugs out so I believe most damage is exterior/cosmetic except as noted below.

I値l try to head off negative comments by saying that I'm embarrassed by her present condition, but life, family, work & other pursuits got in the way of keeping in the water and well maintained.

Mostly built 1972 - 1975, first sailed 1978. Hull is 3/8 marine fir over Philippine mahogany frames/keelson, resorcinol glued/bronze ring nailed. Hull is epoxy vectra (polypropylene) sheathed. Deck is epoxy and vectra (as I recall) sheathed and cabin sides are epoxy/glass sheathed.

I believe the hull is in reasonably sound condition, I know of some minor rot in the transom/motor well framing, a small ding type of damage in one side that will require at least some filler/painting and may require minor ply replacement. All of the exterior trim wood is in poor shape, varnish peeled and there is some softness in some pieces. Oil based deck paint is cracking/peeling, but the sheathing underneath looks OK from the small area I looked at. Interior paint is peeling in places. CB is zinc flame sprayed steel.

Sitka spruce mast & boom were in good condition when stored under eves and garage 10 years ago.

3 sails; main, small working jib, roller furling genny, all should be in good + condition tho I haven't looked at them recently.

Trailer may be salvageable, but not currently road worthy - hitch coupler rusted out, condition of bearing & tires unknown. Trailer & boat would have to be taken out on car hauler trailer or similar.

    No motor. No cushions.

Needs work/restoration but could again be a nice daysailer/pocket cruiser

Since I壇 like her to have some chance of being restored, I知 willing to give her away free to someone from the WoodenBoat community. If no one takes her by end of February or so, I値l list her Craigslist for a nominal sum.

Ditto. Boat looks fine, but I can tell that the condition of the trailer would be the deal-breaker for most folks.

Hitch couplers are easy to replace with a new one. The bearings and tires would be the main issue.

    Best of luck!

Reminds me a lot of my boat (Steve Redmond's Elver) when I pulled it out of a cow barn almost 6 years ago, but I paid money for mine and there was no trailer!

Sounds like a worthwile project for the right person.

Having received no inquiries from the first post, I'm bumping this thread in case the weekend readership is larger/different than the midweek readership.

They are such a fine boat, I hope someone takes her on.

A couple of us have just recovered two TS16s that were destined for the dump if no one took them.

One, in good condition, went to a boatless former TS14 owner and 1/2 the other has ended up in my backyard as a sandpit for the ever growing tribe of grandchildren. The other 1/2 did end up at the dump.

I did know know how soft a plywood cabin top can get if it has a layer polystyrene glued to the underside.
