Actuall Building Cost so far Gypsy Cat

I just summed up all my receipts for the build so far for my Woods Gypsy Catamaran. (28 foot cabin cat)
I need to get the cost to get a Hull ID and registered. Hopefully I will be in the water by this summer.

I still need to get the Mast/rig and sails.

Looks like I will be paying taxes on about 35K worth of boat. ( I still have to double check all these numbers)

This does not take into account marina yard fee of 1200 a year while I finish it all.
Plus the fee to rent a crane to get this boat in the water

Can't wait to get it in the water.

do you have that list broken down as to type of materials? (like meranti ply or mahogany ply)

The break out of lumber is 3500 for oakum plywood
The rest is by and large douglas fir. In this design fir is used as framing and strength areas. In large part I bought 1X6's and cut them down to 1X2 for use.

Looking back I would not have thought the fir would cost 1/2 of all the wood cost. Go figure.

Chill, here in NJ if you paid sales tax for the raw materials there is no tax at title / registration. Doesn't seem fair to tax you twice...

about my thoughts on the costs; the lumber for me is pretty easy cause i live in where it comes from. it will be interesting in the cost diffrence between Gypsy and Rhea. IIRC you aren't tracking hours? or is that another builder?

Taxes: Yes I paid sales tax on all the material. But here in VA I have to pay property tax. So to get the value I have to sum up all the cost of raw materials.

Time: No I have not been keeping track of build time. I started 10/24/2002. At least that is when I bought and had delivered a ton of oakum ply wood to my house. (I have pictures of the family playing ping pong on the stack) I started lofting and building bulkheads right after delivery. Wow , time fly's. 7 years. Build cabin 1 year/ hull1 1 year/ hull 2 1 year/ keels and beams 1 year. (all of this in my back yard nights and weekends) Then moved parts to marina for the last 2 or 3 years putting together and fitting out.

I have learned a ton and am still learning. I am sure when I get it on the water there will be even more learning

No cushions and all the extras are not figured in. I figure to get this thing in the water and sailing then add that stuff in.
I am even considering sewing the cushions myself.
I am sure there will be even more expenses once I am on the water.
More electronics/cushions/whatever

I just went in and double checked my numbers and took out tax and shipping and handling. Went from 24 K to 19 K. So 5 K in taxes and shipping costs. wow.

I've been following this one and yes shipping and tax is something that is definitely worthy of some savvy thinking. For my own build I have tried to find suppliers all within a two or three state radius and have my own delivery truck, so my cost on delivery is basically the cost of fuel. On the tax issue I have a biz so can use my tax ID and claim resale status, saves 6~8% which is nothing to sneeze at. I was not surprised to see tax and shipping added up but I was surprised to see someone else actually figuring it out. Seems one of the things that gets lost in the excitement or something.

Yes. I took out the tax and shipping because the personal property tax is based on the materials I used to build it. Save me a few dollars on property tax.

I did not go the DIY route for sails, nets, cushions or dodger for my 28' tri Damfino. The total cost was close to $10K. I've stopped complaining about the cost of epoxy or winches.

another thing Ive managed that saves me a few bucks here and there is I buy materials for a job and order extra as we all must because of waste, drop offs and what not. I keep or sell the extra, its not always much but add up all those 5 or 10 % and its a healthy chunk of change.

not sure if it it might work for your particular project but can you buy a salvage boat and steal the rig off of it

preferable some cookie cutter rig whos components are readily available

Yea that should work if I can find one. Its a matter of time. I am just now in the process of researching getting the rig. So if I find a used one I will grab it else a new one it will be.
