Yeah Thad, it was great to see how she'd come on.. because the boat is remote I just hadn't seen it at all and really she's going to be good as new if not better.There was a critical time there where it was a serious option that she would be written off.
Those guys don't work by rote, they're thinking and applying knowledge all the time.They increased the rebates on the transom timber for more surface area for example. All the scarfs are 16:1. The decision has been made to not hang the backstay off the strap( in that rebate) as she was... rather they will have a deck fitting bolted through slightly inboard for a better geometry and strength.

I showed my wife the first of the "before" photos sitting in the shop with the transom missing. She recoiled in honest horor saying it was like looking at an amputation. So I showed her the final photo above after reconstruction. Beautiful boat with a great deal of character. It must have broken hearts when the damage was first done.

You might be mixing a couple of boats up there CW. Ngataringa has had her counter replaced after the mooring munch up and I'll be seeing her again in a couple of weeks. I agree with what you say, I just felt physically ill myself when I first saw that photo.
Rawhiti, the most recent photos in my what can I park my car under or near thread is Rawhiti , which is just off a 6 year restoration and will be launched tomorrow. Thread in building and repair.

The last time I was on the water, Friday last week, was the opening ceremony for the rugby world cup which is on here ATM.
We snaffled a ride on Destination and snuck out into the no-go zone and came across this lurking in the dark.....



ah yes , the profile of a well known classic , the Nagatira.
They'd been given GPS coordinates as to where to anchor alongside other classic or whatevers to put on a bit of a show.

We did sneak the anchor down but got turfed out by some people in white coats in RIBs, so we moved about oooo 70 metres and camoflaged by darkness, re anchored.
Be prepared for some photographs following, on viewing it's compulsory to say ooooo, ahhh, cor lummee.....

Incidentally , the Mig 21 a page or so back featured in the newspaper recently. The guy who bought it has now had it lifted onto the roof of the commercial building it was parked in front of. 2 interesting little facts, he paid $60k for it . It cost $60k to have the roof structure etc and the crane lift. A $NZ120K billboard.

I was reading back , its a funny thread isn't it. A bit odd some would say.

Yeah it was a great night although "someone" was a bit belligerent when confronted with jumped up parking attendants with a mandate to disqualify fun in the name of the greater good and just because. It's all good curmudgeon training.

We shot back to the marina in amongst a stream of boats and stayed aboard ours for the night in the marina. Destination and Riada are neighbours, how handy.

The plane moved a while back to a new position. I was out 'buying a paper' and stopped for a look. I ended up with a MIG in the sun.....

and on the way home I stopped for a look at another boat, plane or sumpin....




I actually have a fondness for 1959 Chevs/ GM, I had a '59 Pontiac when I was a young fella. The Chevrolet agents/ importers of the day didn't bring the whole range into NZ, mostly we had just 4 door post cars and the occasional 4 door pillarless, not many 2 doors at all. This Bel air 2 door post ( manual too) is a recent import.

My mother had one of those 59 Chev's, a four door, she paid a high-school kid $100 for it. It had a lot of miss-matched body parts (which turned out to be stolen) so we kids got to paint it in the driveway one sunny Saturday.......The good old days, as you say John........

The other big Classic Yacht Charitable trust boat Thelma was out recently too, so I found my park..







The interesting thing about this boat compared to Waitangi, is the evolution in that critical 1890's period. I believe Thelma has 1898 on her rudder post, but she's actually quite conservative for that date. Lovely transitional bow, not a clipper, not a full spoon, but cut away forefoot and a bit beefier in her midsections.

This is a really good boat, nicely balanced and quick .

Nice spotting. Rona is a lot smaller but she was built by Robt Logan snr as was Waitangi a year or so later. I don't have my books to hand but my recollection is that Rona might be a G.L. Watson design. Rona is pretty but she's very fine and that translates into more pitching in a seaway than the designs a few years later.
Anyway, what you see when you look at the two Trust yachts , Waitangi and Thelma, is the changing of the guard as the younger Logans design and build their first big yacht, which is why Thelma is an advancement on Waitangi ,and Rona for that matter. She definitely is on the water ,although Waitangi has been known to pull the cat out of the bag from time to time.

Probably one of the more influential boats on NZ's sailing history too. She was the inspiration for Ranger, a 60 ft racing yacht which dominated Auckland yachting from 1938 to about the mid 1960's , when she was finally eclipsed by boats like Infidel ( Infidel became Ragtime , the famous Transpac sled.)

That was in 2000 or so when she came over for the first time after her restoration in AU. Johnny G and I had strolled down to look at her and ended up helping do something... slide the bowsprit in or sumpin, so we were invited out for one of her 'first ' sails in Auckland.

and another, no idea who took this...

Us on Waione and Velsheda when she was here. This was well before the 'superyacht' phenomenon we have going on now and she was just astonishing for us to see.
