We have some fancier car threads ... but I came across a car like this today ... gets me fired up for some classic American Muscle!

Neat car ... and a REAL GSX! Most are knock-offs, which is fine by me, but it is neat to see a real one.

I saw a Dodge Charger in the parking lot today. Hemi. It had something written on the windshield, in those big letters, like "I'm the baddest of the bad." That wasn't it, but something like that.
I took more than a passing glance. The styling was good. Kudos to whomever young designers are working Chrysler's design studios today.

Good stuff. The GS Buick in particular would be high on my list; a very comfortable touring 2 door with locomotive grade torque, decent performance, and made from materials undoubtly superior to its peers. Maybe a Brembo upgrade from Muscle Car nirvana.
The GTO convertible sure brings back memories - at 17, I had a friend with a '66 4-speed, replete with chrome side pipes. He very selflessly taught me, in his car, the art of speed-shifting. Or at least the parts that start with "don't lift, just move quickly". Great fun, at the time
The late '60s Shelby reminds me of the summer we had a dark blue GT500KR convertible. '68 428 SCJ, if memory serves. Cool car, no doubt, but really less than remarkable in the excitement department. Particularly when compared to my personal "most exciting muscle car" experience, which was a '64 Impala SS-409 4-speed with dual Carter AFBs, much like this one:

The one I owned was not an AAR but it was fast for the short time I owned it. Stupid kid I bought one that was wrecked and a new front end was welded on improperly. It ended up in several pieces on Rt 110 just outside of Clinton Ma. Frost heaves at over 100mph tend to tear bad welds. Was picking glass out of my scalp for quite a while after. Funny thing was my dad was coming the other way a short time later. Saw the front end on one side of the road and the rest on the other and didn't know I had bought it. He figured it out when he saw me sitting on the back of the fire truck. I took some years off the poor bastards life that day. Little did I know my son would do something similar. First thing I do at a light while next to a subaru is cut the wheels all the way towards it and yell "best be quick" I can guarantee after that run the Cuda will drive home but I cant say the same for the rice burner.
Rice is nice, but can it take a punch?

I was raised just outside of Boston. We are taught at an early age its not defensive driving but instead offensive driving. If your fenders are straight you are a pussy.

VERY fast, popeye ... wouldn't be caught dead in one! Not my cup o'tea! I guess it's more the drivers that I don't like ... mainly kids in those driving like idiots around me!

Speaking of GNX's, that engine actually produced well over 300hp! Formal stuff said 250hp, though.
The next car I buy will be a 1987 IROC-Z with the 350tpi motor ... I'll have it restored to new! These are the new collectors ... and they can still be had on the cheap! Under 5-grand in most cases!

and , as much as i can appreciate muscle cars , there is no substitute for straight pipes coming out the back of one of those things ..
.. i like lateral acceleration and braking performance more

Ahhh... the cars of our youth. Brad, your the same age as me. My first car when I turned 16 was a 1986 Pontiac Trans Am GTA with that 350. FWIW, I'd never consider owning another one though.
Personally I think the best values in performance collector cars are mid 1980 Porsche 911s and C4 Corvettes with the Lotus built LT-5. Both can be found in good to excellent condition with low miles for less than $15,000. Both make good daily drivers.

I had an 86 911 a few years back ... Turbo with whale tail. GREAT looking car! Guards Red on Black! Wide body ... but I guess that model was all wide body!
Those IROCs and/or GTAs were certainly not engineering or quality masterpieces, but I still love them. With modern brakes and suspension components they are pretty darned good performers, though.
Besides, I just want one.
When I turned 16, I got a 1985 Mustang GT, red on red, automatic. That was a fast little car in the day! It was a good birthday!

I have to say my all time favorite was a new 78' Nova four door with the 9C1 police package. My father needed a car for a six month job and the intent was I would take it over. I did a lot of research and at that time we all know options to go fast were limited.
After some discussion he agreed and we ordered one in red.
Soon after he got it he was done with it and I took possession. I went to Gussie Zeidermans and layed out the cash to have the motor gone over. Emissions gone and new carb it probally topped near 270 hp.
I took a kleenex box and glued it in the center of the rear seat deck as the state and federal boys did that to conceal the antenna in their Dic cars.
Nothing like a sleeper and for a short haired sailor wearing Ray bans it was funny to have cops wave at you as I drove buy.
I threw that car around hard for years and loved it the whole time.
I found an ad that shows it exactly.

I've got one but you can't have it.!
Be prepared to spend a few $$$ to get it back to original if that's your goal. I wasn't able to make mine 100% original but it's "authentic". Seats are out of a '99 and are a big improvement over the OEM '87 seats. Exhaust is 3" Magnaflow. Throttle Body is Holley. MAF is Granatelli. The only other tell it isn't 100% original is the MP3 Jack in the stereo.
I think if I tallied it all up I'm up to about $9K. The only thing left to do now is new carpet & floor mats.

depending on what you need to do with your car sometimes muscle doesn't mean total Hp.

The main attraction of the SRT-10 is its engine, which is an 8.3 Liter V10 Viper Engine. This engine produces 500 bhp (373 kW; 507 PS) at 5,600 rpm and 525 lb·ft (712 N·m) of torque at 4,200 rpm. The regular cab, with a total wet weight of 5,100 lb (2,300 kg), making the truck reach a top speed of 155 mph (249 km/h), and can accelerate the regular cab SRT-10 from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 4.8 seconds and the Quad Cab version in 4.9 seconds. It runs the 1/4 mile in 13.19 sec @ 105 mph MT.

The American muscle car I lusted after as a teenager was the '67-'68 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442. Did they make it with a convertible top? If they did, I'm cashing in my pension and going on a road trip! He he.

SRT-10 is a beast of a truck!
Too bad they are so light on the back end ... they get to hopping pretty quickly is one is not careful.
Got a red one at the store right now ... 2004 with 6-speed ... the quad cab is the automatic version!
That is a truck that brings true meaning to "sometimes you have to turn right to go left!"
We did some drifting in it the other day around a back building ... hopefully the new owner, whomever that may be, won't mind/notice!
