She was listed for sale last year. I called and talked to the owner then and he was very forthright. IIRC he recommended that she needs to be completely replanked, reframed, and redecked. You could probably save the backbone, the cabin, and interior. The masts are salvageable but are not original nor even original spec. Sails and motor useless.

There are some great photos in that album by the way.

There's a 65' Crowninshield Schooner that's been for sale, bought and now up for sale again up this way. It had soft decks and was glassed but the core sample I saw looked good. I looked at it but declined as it just wasn't what I wanted at the time. That's 65' LOA so probably 40' LOD.

Gees....who in their right mind would buy a schooner that needs new ribs, planking, deck and masts?

That would have been this one. The pictures expired, but the words tell the story.

Can't find it... link or name to search? All I get is the Fame of Salem, a different vessel.

Looks like she wasn't in as bad a shape as the seller suggested.

Isn't he the guy that took the America's Cup with an overwhelming spread of lawyers? :-)

No, actually he isn't. He's one hell of a good sailor and if you missed the Cup races back when he was driving the boat, I feel sorry for you.

He IS a hell of a good sailor. But if he had only covered Australia on that final leg in Newport...

I know it. I was amazed at the time. But I give him credit for going the distance against a superior boat.

She's got an incredibly glossy black paint job now. The whole hull.
A bit out of place imho, but that's DC's way. I wonder if she'll have hi tech sails, too?

Bainbridge made a batch of special Egyptian Dacron/mylar cruise laminate for the replica of America that was built a few years ago. It had the look of cotton paired with the stability and performance of laminated cloth. They looked quite good, except for the fact that some idiot put radial corner patches on them, which instantly branded them as modern fakes to anybody who knows much about sails.

I head that Fame is for sale again in her odd staysail schooner rig. $60K. If she looked like this again I'd go for it.2013_0109_Fame.jpg

She's right here in my home harbor. I had no idea. My father in law posted some recent pics on the WBF Facebook page.
