Makes a dandy tiller
3/4 marine ply and white oak are no problem for plastic nails and a palm nailer. Of course, you have to drill for the nails. They are used to hold things in contact until the epoxy kicks.

Many thanks to all who responded. I have decided to use the S glass. We'll see how it goes.
The design of the Joel White 23 I am building calls for S fiberglass for covering the veneer on the centerboard and rudder. The only thing I have been able to learn about S glass is that it is 20...
I have the same compressor. I use it in the vertical position and drain it I the horizontal. Too bad there is no adjustment on tank pressure!
Dave
Put me in the too thick column. Could be too thick a coat or too thick in the can or both!
Dave
What are you building? I figured stock needed by multiplying length times greatest girth plus twenty percent for a 20 foot Ocean Pointer. This for two to three and sometimes four pieces per strake....
I've asked Senco about 316 brads, most are 304. I was told if you order enough we'll make them out of anything. Enough is a VERY big number.
Dave
I guess you could do what you outline. You'll sacrifice The self bailing cockpit, smooth interior for easy maintenance, a place to bury the engine control lines, bulkheads and deck which greatly...
The cover aside, it is an excellent book.

Some will find this strange but I would recommend building the winter cover support in the spring. If you wait until the weather makes nasty, your fingers fall off, a quick job will be done and the...
I would keep the tender in the water. If conditions are so grim that loss of the tender is at all likely, having one on the coach roof would be downright dangerous. Imagine a big sea sweeping over...
You might try Atlas metals. Nice people, they answer questions

Check to see if drill is in reverse.
I think my tube is three mil. It is available in many widths (circumferences). Good old Ebay for both tube and wallpaper steamer. I use a small plastic Wagner steamer with their hose. The poly...
I think it took longer to post the pictures than it did to make the tiller! Thanks for all for the nice comments.

I have made a tiller for the Joel White 23 over the last few days. Here are a few pictures of the process I used; I have an aversion to laminated tillers strictly from an appearance viewpoint. The...
I've used foam glass blocks for fairing two boats. Works pretty well producing a nice smooth fair surface. This is NOT the material used to clean grills. The glass abrades, not what you want on the...
The video is interesting. Is that a cedar canoe? How many times have I been told you cannot scrape wood much softer than mahogany. Anyone have any ideas? I suppose I could just go give it a try...
Plywood is not great for putting screws into the edge. I use real wood, pine. There is nothing wrong with one inch stock using plywood to join the pieces.
Dave
My guess is that it is dry now. You'll be fine.

Just a note from a boatbuilder/EMT. Please, please, please, if this should happen to you, call 911. Care, including drugs (if appropriate) starts when the EMTs arrive. I know of a case in which...
Easiest way is to build a heavy frame. Two by ten longitudinals with two by six beams and a subfloor deck will not move once everything is leveled up. No need to fasten the frame to the floor. Old...
I've used raptor nails for securing strips and staples to secure veneer. I'm a fan.
PM if you have questions.

Or, you could leave the blade hard and use the hole on the end of the hacksaw blade for your pivot. The blades cut beautifully with a cold chisel. I have made them for all sorts of lengths as...
I made an oven using one inch rigid foam, a light bulb and a line voltage thermostat to keep the goo warm. Since using itive never had the dreaded pump clog.

I have good luck with Atlantic Plywood in S Portland.
Dave
A friend had his ss chainplates sandblasted. They looked like bronze after a few years. I've never see it done on tube; might be worth a try.

Are playtex gloves nitrile?
Many years ago an old timer was hired to take the train Downeast and sail a Friendship sloop from Maine to Massachusetts. It being winter, Byron took a kero (wick type) parlor stove with him....
My shop is my pouch, Whatever I need is right over there, under the stuff on the bench. I wish I could work neatly, I've tried and it just doesn't work for me.

I have no idea about British charcoal but British coal is very different than USA coal. The melting temp of the British ash is very high compared to ours making ash handling vastly different. If you...
Varnish over epoxy no problem. You do have to sand. Epoxy makes a nice base and fills the grain.

OK, here is how I steam. Really cheap wallpaper steamer (EBAY), long poly tube, either bought or made from sheet using duct tape. Insert stock in the poly tube, run steamer tube half way in and...
What has worked for me in similar situations is to laminate right on the boat (poly sheet to keep things from sticking. I would use white oak rather than ash since ash is apt to rot. Three...
Heat gun, scraper and organics mask. Very easy and will not harm the plywood.

I believe the rule of thumb is 1/3 for the carving, 2/3 for the backing. Good luck with it!
I grew up in a Swampscot dory; beam sea is not a problem. They float like a duck.

Seconding what has already been said. By avoiding having to pull staples there is no reason to limit the number of staples driven. For my 23 foot build, I used 15000 plus staples and had no voids. ...
How much do you need, I have a few scraps left over

Here is a trick commercial fishermen use here. Muddy bottom, no rocks. First loose the swivels, a lot of boats have been lost because of swivels they wear and corrode readily. To prevent hockles,...
I have the small Lee Neilsen block plane without an adjustable throat. It is fine for taking a very light cut but for anything serious, the throat clogs. If I open the throat, by filing, I'm afraid...
Aerohydro marine in Maine provides this service. I bought lines from them that had previously been done for another client. Dave
Block of wood. Length, width and thickness = three degrees of open.
I have used toggles with a long (two feet or so) line between oarlock and toggle. This prevents the oarlock from beating on the inside of the boat. The line wants to be pretty strong because...
In regard to the long bench; mine is six inches wide. This saves tons of valuable floor space and tends to force me to clean the bench more often. The vise is a problem but can be put on another...
For years, I have been punching two holes in the LID of the varnish can and sealing those with #10 sheet metal screws. The varnish has to be poured through the holes into the filter. Two holes are...
I just looked on EBAY under rivett lathe, very interesting
