Yes, a good friend of mine did build one, but now I am living in Pa. It is fast, and I think the sprit rig is handy.
However, Tom Jones does not go crazy with the details in his plans. If I wasn't...
Many, many old Jersey boats were planked cedar on oak, with a ply deck, and by no means were they just the small ones. I had a 37' Egg harbor that was essentially done that way.
As far as fixing...
I was thinker more along the lines of clinker cedar on oak.
I want something with sweet overhangs, maybe a round transom.
does anyone know of a set of lines for a 18 to 20 foot launch, built of traditional cedar on oak?
I am looking for a small fishing boat to utilize a small 5 hp diesel I found for sale.

What company out there is making them?
Northern is more resistant to splitting. Personally, I Use atlantic white 99% of the time because I buy it locally for $1.20 a BF.
I would use local northern white cedar, It grows up by you, you can buy it at a mom and pop sawmill, and pick through the piles.
It's better planking wood, anyway.

Thank you guys for the help. I just ordered a head gasket from Torresson Marine. Hopefully it will be here in a few days.
I did check out the head and cylinder and did not see or feel any cracks....
I have a 1978 YSM-12. It's a horizontal single cylinder yanmar.
I blew the head gasket, and removed it already, clearly it had been going for a while.
But, here is the issue. There was grey...

I decide to use a large windsurfer sail set upside down as a topsail. do any of you know how long those sails last? It is purple, pink, clear, and yellow dacron/mylar.

OK, some specifics as to how I'd do her cheap.
Instead of doug fir (which goes for about $9 a BF around here, I would use atlantic white cedar, which goes for less than a dollar a board foot.

Other than the vertical staving, I have seen some old work boats with the "bread and butter" sterns.
They were pretty much blocks of 4 by 8's, maybe 1 foot long, drifted and bolted to each other....
I did a sharpie with an eliptical transom once.
I made upper and lower frames, and planked the trnsom up like a barrel. I had to use pretty thick planking stock, though, because those planks...
