Amen! It teaches an adult nothing either. If someone is just looking for the easiest way to do something, why are they sailing in the first place?
Tom
Man, you got a whole lot of big ships out there where you sail! I wouldn't want to get run down by one of them.
Any idea of the speed you were going here? After the chance to sail with my brother...
No, this post typifies the mythology even better, I think. Mike Monies and Andrew Linn used a polytarp sail for Mike's Scamp in their last Everglades Challenge, and it held up fine. True, they didn't...
Yeah, but do you guys have deep fried cheese curds figured out yet?
Tom
Hmm... we had 8" of snow here last week, and the ice is not out on the local lakes yet. Almost, but not quite...
Tom
I have no question people who know what they're doing are right when they point out that polytarp sails don't perform as well or last as long (my own experience confirms the lack of longevity) and...
Must be nice--still waiting for ice out here, and got 6 or 7" of snow yesterday that's still hanging around.
Tom
Are you sure the mizzen isn't stepped on the transom just to starboard of the rudder?
Tom
I find using oversize tongue depressors works well, after applying a bead of epoxy with the ziplock bag/corner snipped off. The trick is to make one pass with the edge of the tongue depressor flat...
Hmm... several centuries of Polynesian voyagers might disagree.
Tom
Kind of cool that Gary Larson commissioned a boat from you; his work was really a turning point in comics (lots of imitators now, but I don't recall anyone doing what he was doing before he did it)....
I find the idea of a mandatory bond or fee quite repulsive, despite its inherent financial logic. It seems to head in the direction of handing over decisions to some "expert" or authority or...
But how would you have felt if you needed to post a non-refundable bond, with your money going to cover people who were less prepared than you? So you post a $500 bond, say, and the local rescue team...
Ah, but every time you get in a car and take to the highway you're risking the same thing, and for much less of a payoff. We fool ourselves when we think we can--or even ought to--avoid risk.
Tom
Looks great--I like the color scheme, too.

This is us heading through Whitewater Bay, the last stretch of the Wilderness Waterway. The Whitewater Bay route is somewhat of a shortcut as far as distance, and lets you reach the final checkpoint...
Here's my brother Lance with his Phoenix III; this is maybe six or seven miles past CP 1, where we stopped to tie in a reef after broad reaching at 6 knots for most of the day. This was the only time...
Here is Gary Blankenship (Lugnut) and Chuck Leinweber (aka Chuck the Duck) launching Chuck's 18' stretched Walkabout:

And here's...
I've always used an athwartships set-up with the yard on the port side of the mast and haven't noticed any problems in practice with twisting on a port tack. The attachment point of yard/halyard...
Ok, so I have it now. Here's the CLC Northeaster Dory launching. This boat was one of only two monohull sailboats to finish the 2012 EC, and didn't seem to have any problems this year either.

I'll try this: Here's a trimaran that used a Gary Dierking main hull, built by Chief but finished and sailed by someone else--the rest is not to plan:

Steve,
thanks. I'm hoping to find a way around all that as I can't get to my Photobucket account from my work computer, or to the Internet from my home computer. I was hoping Dropbox counts as a...
I'll try this:

Nope...
So, does anyone know how to put in photos from Dropbox here? The link works but I couldn't figure out how to post the image. Thanks,
Tom
I'll try to add a few pictures; here's Neil Calore with his CLC Northeaster Dory the day before the race--Neil (in this boat) was one of only two monohull sailboats to finish the EC in 2012's brutal...
I'm envious of lapstrake boats, and the way the plank lines really bring a nice contrast/emphasis to lighter colors, especially. I've been thinking of that green (from post #50) for my strip-planked...
Great work, and a great boat. Just a clarification: my understanding is that a sprit is the long diagonal spar that holds up the peak of a 4-sided spritsail; a sprit boom is probably what the CY...
Thread drift: I got the chance to row the Grand Canyon on a 24-day trip with Greg Hatten and the Portola (I rowed a baggage raft, mostly). That guy can handle a boat in whitewater--made it look easy....
I'm not so sure about "outpoint."
Tom
I take it you can't re-apply antifreeze after it's epoxy coated, though; is that right? How about antifreeze over paint as post #11 suggests?
Tom
Clint,
the Phoenix is 15' 2", I think. I hadn't realized the KDI is so short. Looks like that extra foot (plus the transom end) gives the Phoenix more room fore-and-aft in the cockpit than the...
I've heard this, too (antifreeze as rot prevention). Is it compatible with an epoxy-coated boat? Some people who seem to know what they're talking about suggest not.
Tom
No problem; my own bias is toward the narrow-beamed row/sail compromise. I probably need to get out more aboard beamier boats to better understand the difference. Maybe the extra stability of a wider...
Cool--you're building a Walkabout, eh? I got to see Chuck Leinweber's (Duckworks founder) stretched Walkabout in Florida last month during the Everglades Challenge. Looks like a great design, a...
Clint,
I notice the KDI's mast is stepped through the deck, while the Phoenix III's steps inside the cockpit with a whaleboat-style mast gate which makes it easier to step and unstep the mast at...
Well, now, let's not be too hasty. The KDI is a fine boat, and beautiful, no doubt about it. But the Phoenix III is nowhere near as unstable as you're making it sound here. When we did our capsize...
James,
I'm shocked! I know you don't usually like the double-ender look.BY:D
Tom
I think two adults is about all the room the Phoenix III really has; you could cram a third in, but... It is comfortable for two, though, even two at 6' 3" tall each, even with both sleeping aboard....
Hmm... that'd be an interesting option; thanks,
Tom
Thanks, Alex,
I'll check that out. I'm thinking 2014 might work out that I could get there and try it.
Tom
Anders,
thanks; I actually found Peter's email and sent him a note yesterday. Good to know I'm talking to the right person. Are you thinking of doing Raid Finland yourself?
Tom
What does anyone know about this event? (I can't find mention of it online after 2012). Is it still going on? If a poor boatless sailor from the US showed up, what would be the chances of being taken...
Man, this looks great!
Tom
Bummer... good luck with the rehab, and the new construction schedule.
Tom
On the other hand, I've cruised the Great Lakes pretty comfortably in small (14-15' boats) with no cabin at all; depends what you want, I guess. It can be done safely--comfort, of course, is a...
I think Nancy's China was probably a break-through design in the pre-YouTube age; that may be why it's less well-documented than many more recent designs. Seems like it's a solid design; Devlin has...
Yep, that's easy in the Phoenix III. The stowed mast overhangs the cockpit while you row, but does not interfere with rowing. For trailering, open the hatch on the forward bulkhead and the mast lies...
Sorry I missed these recent posts. You ask about heaving to: well, if you let the sheet fly free, the sail weathercocks nicely and the boat sits quietly and comfortably with the bow about 70 degrees...
In case you haven't seen these, here are a couple of my threads about my brother's Phoenix III;
