    It is quite common during hot summers, the barges will get a low water surcharge for traveling part laden. The long term outlook for the Rhine as a glacier river is indeed not very good.

    freeze drying the wood
    impregnate it with polyethylene-glycol
    Or even more exotic impregnations of resin/aceton combinations, I don't think they will use CPES |:)...
