Luke chapter 24 -
On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3...
My bad, guys, the wood in the pictures has been sitting outside for a couple of months with only a few coats of neatsfoot oil thinned with turps. The surface is still slightly 'waxy', but not oily,...
This is where I've been up to for a while now, but I'm having trouble fitting the next planks. I think that some of the frames are a touch under (small, that is), which is causing an unfair curve in...
Here are some photos. Thanks for the replies and ideas. Started testing Tung, BLO, varnish and turps combinations as well. I quite like what I've seen so far today with a combination of BLO, tung,...
A little while on, and the offcuts of Huon, Celery top and King Billy pine, have held up surprising well. I'll take some photos tomorrow and get them on here.
Andy
Just dropping in to say hello! Hope all is well since Hobart. It looks like there's plenty happening with all you boats at the moment, mad! I'm fitting the third plank to my dory, and I took a bit...
Looking good Duncan!
Thanks for the feedback fellas. I'm not trying to reinvent anything. I like the soft finish that neatsfoot oil gives, and that's what I'm aiming for. Synthetic timber oils are out of the equation,...
John, brilliant drawings and photos. That little Faz. dinghy, 'Tiddler', has great canvas bags! Took a photo of those myself as well. Ahhhhhhh, what a weekend it was!
I've only ever used it on my oar leathers as well. I've been pondering and reading about different oil finishes - linseed, tung, pine tar - and then neatsfoot came to mind, and here I am. We'll see...
Hello! I'm trying and testing neatsfoot oil mixed with turps - about 50/50 - on some western red cedar at the moment, in order to work out whether or not it would work as a protective oil for...
I reckon Mallana and Storm Bay were my picks of the larger boats of the festival. Great photos Duncan, got plenty myself as well!
Hello! Updates and progress have been slow, and they might continue to be, but I thought I'd just drop you a line as to where I'm currently at.
There are now two planks on either side, with the...
Hello! Thanks all for a fantastic night on friday! It was so great sharing dinner and a few beers with you all! I'll make sure I drop by the forum a little more regularly now.
What a great group...
And would it be possible to grab a mobile number (via PM) regarding friday night's dinner? Thanks guys
I'll be on my friend's boat, 'Marama", so I should be right!
Oh, and feel free to call me Andrew, or Andy - those usernames were taken, so Ando was the next best thing haha.
Mr Larks, and friends, I would love to join you on the friday night, if that's ok with you! I'm flying down thursday morning from Sydney, and heading back sunday arvo. It'll be great to meet you all!...
And Phil, if you enter "*" into the boat name form, you'll get a full listing as well. If too many of us do that we might crash the thing though haha!
Their downside is that they get real cold in the winter, and super hot in the summer - it's been in the 30s this week in Sydney, but scorching in my shed! Maybe I just need to man up. The epoxy goes...
Both garboards are on! Glad to finally be able to say that! Enjoy.

Geez! A week and a half and the planking's done, brilliant! I need to lift my game haha.
I'm going to risk it. Glued epoxy planking really should act as the biggest gusset I think. If the frames do ever split or come apart, I'll tend to the problem with gussets at that point. And yes,...
Well, with the advice you all gave me, I got that garboard on with no problems at all. I used a board for leverage, and then some shores from the roof, just as drawn in The Dory Book. Here's a few...
Terry, you're a genius. I was looking for that sort of leverage, and you've provided the answer for me! Thanks mate, I'll definitely have a go at that.
mdh - Yeah I went with the plywood bottom, it was easier for me. I've seen another plywood dory (around 13ft, built a lot lighter) with a batten running down the CL with a brass half oval on top of...
That makes a lot of sense, thanks Gib. I'm a lot more hopeful about this plank after the last few posts, thanks! I'm really hoping to get the boat planked by the end of the year, but we'll see how it...
Terry, thanks for the reassurance and advice, much appreciated. It is 9mm (3/8") gaboon - The rest of the planking will be the same, as per Gardner's suggestion.
Thanks Gib, will do!
Andrew,...
Hi all,
just thought I'd add a few more photos to show where I'm currently up to. And I've struck a bit of a problem with trying to get the first garboard on - it's really hard to bend the aft end...
Here we go:
Transom, made up from two different boards, with the outer two pieces being cut from the same original board, get me?...
Hi again, It's been a while since I last posted, and some photos will come in the coming days. Gib, I ended up going with a support for the stem kinda similar to yours, but thanks Terry for the...
Thanks for your thoughts on gussets and everything else dory related. Here's where I'm up to now. And I think I'll add gussets if the need arises down the track (based on the experience of a...
Thanks for the photos and advice, James, I'll do something about the frames. Now, why is it that in Oughtred's clinker ply book he shows dory frames without any gussets or fastenings. Is it because...
Alrighty, the frames and stem are now faired and looking pretty good. Next will be the transom. Photos will come over the next little while.
Cheers,
Andy
(Beernd, it's not my boat - I was just there for the slipping! ;))
Hi Terry, the reason I scarphed in that extra piece was to cover the part of the stem that had quite a bit of curve in it - enough that the single scarph joint wasn't going to be enough for the stem....
Hi James, I'm using Bote-Cote epoxy - and Australian epoxy - with their high-strength thickening powder mixed in. Am I doing things right?
Just a little update...

Just thought I'd let you all know that Hoana was relaunched the Wednesday just gone (June 20th), and all went very smoothly. I'm led to believe there'll be articles to follow in the near future.
Thanks for all that info, Jim! Great drawing as well - I was actually planning on having some buoyancy chambers in there as well. My current boat, a Jimmy Skiff that I built last year, has a chamber...
Yep, this'll have a sprit rig, as per the plans, and if need be later on, I can play around with different rigs - Leg O Mutton for example.
Glued up the final frame today, and have made some...
Ah wow. Did you build traditionally? Most, if not all, of the dories Gardner documented/designed are pretty nice-looking boats hey.
I'll be building in glued clinker for this one, but down the...
Hi All,
I've recently started building John Gardner's 16ft Swampscott Dory - the revised, widened version taken from his "More Building Classic Small Craft". I started lofting and planning other...
After filming had finished, the bloke rowing said, "After rowing for that short time, I can understand how one could get really into this - taking it out for the day with some mates fishing". That's...
Wow, there's so much of it, and so cheap!
I'm planning on going to the Festival next Feb, and doing some cycle touring for a couple of weeks either side of the festival. I've never been to Tasmania before, but geez I'm excited! See you then...
Hi all,
Just thought I'd share the following video with you: http://vimeo.com/38898817
A mate of mine used my boat for the filming of a video for his church. The guys that shot and edited it...
The font I used for the name on my boat was the font used for the Twin Peaks Season 1 DVD menu, which I was able to find a replica of on the net, called 'House Script'...
That surf dory is perfect! Surely there must be more of you on here with photos of Gardner's boats. My next boat could well be Gardner's Dion Swampscott Dory.
Here are some photos from an afternoon of fishing on Pittwater with three mates yesterday afternoon. Thanks go to the kindly stranger who took the photos. Enjoy.
