Re: HMS Bounty and Hurricane Sandy

    Larks,

The gCaptain folks might not have been bashing woodenboat forums specifically, but they were/are bashing recreational sailors and the "tall ship" people pretty harshly.

    I think that's...

Re: Red, right, returning ... everywhee?

Is there anywhere in the US that uses the cardinal bouys ? I have never seen one in the NE where I sail. I have reviewed them the time that I have sailed to Bermuda, but can't remember them without...

    Re: Clever match racing maneuver

Proper course does come into play for fleet racing and I believe would apply in this case ( depending on how the overlap was created ). I don't know the match racing rules, but they differ somewhat...

    Re: Clever match racing maneuver

I think that the windward boat was overcome with desire to get the spinnaker up and beat the leeward boat. But if they were ready for the luff, they might have gotten the spinnaker back down well...

    Re: Clever match racing maneuver

    Harsh, but very effective.

I think the lesson would be not to hoist until the inside boat has done so also. Or be able to drop the spinnaker very quickly when the luffing starts.

    Re: Pro splice

Covite, I just couldn't see how the 3rd strand got into line, but I tried it this morning and it does get into the right spot. The back side of the splice still seems to have a bit of a gap between...

    Pro splice

I have been working on getting good eye splices and read about the "pro splice" here and in Toss's book. Then I found this description, which claims to be the same splice....

Thanks for the story JD, it is very entertaining and enlightening. Todd
  11. Re: Need some information regarding the consequences of right of way infringements

Yeah, that's bad. A "hot shot" helmsman who doesn't understand how the boat will respond will cause trouble. Glad that no people got injured. I race a lot of fiberglass boats and a few classic...
  12. Re: Need some information regarding the consequences of right of way infringements

If this was really a race, what did you expect them to do ?

Obviously, they expected you to be able to maneuver your vessel. Should have started that duck much sooner.
  13. Re: anybody live near Port Milford Conn? dont know if my boat survived....

I live around the corner from Port Milford and checked up on the marina after the storm. I didn't see any boats have any damage. The storm surge was only 4ft above the normal high tide. All the...

Re: Rule 1: Keels should stay attached.

I am an engineer and you can only over stress once, before you get a failure :-) I do agree with your general idea, you can only heavily load a structure so many times before it fails.

    They...
  15. Re: Looking for Ride - Eggemoggin Reach Regatta (and/or Feeder Races)

Good luck finding a ride. I sailed the ERR last year and it was an excellent day. Beautiful and fun. If you show up at the captains meeting in the morning, you might get lucky.

    Re: How sails really work

No problem, some people have issue with Bernoulli, he gets a bad rap because some people have connected him to some false ideas about airfoils.

The central point on that link is the picture of the...

    Re: How sails really work

Considering that I only need .93 psi of pressure difference on the wing, Bernoulli has no problem.

In general the lower surface can have some increased pressure, but the reduced pressure on the...

[QUOTE=Michael D. Storey;3008773]Well, the Bernoulli principle does not explain the airplane wing, either, because there is too much lift needed for the partial vacuum thingee to do the job....

Re: How Is Sail Racing Handicaps Figured Out ?

PHRF ratings typically have a "base" rating defined by boat type. Then you can get adjustments up or down depending on smaller/larger sails or other boat modifications from stock. It works best for...
