Lucky Pierre in action at the Small Reach Regatta in 2019.
Hi again. This time I'll be more careful.
I'm writing to say thank you and goodbye to the WBF. My cancer has defied treatment and I am in the final countdown. No idea on how long I have so I...
Hmmm. Did I lose my thread by trying to put in a photo? Probably. If I can't find I'll re-write it tomorrow.
Kenny
I just got one off craigslist, too. 15#. Perfect for me. But my holes are round so it was easy to find pins. my chains had rusted away, too.
Kenny
Weeks late but happy birthday anyway! I always enjoy your knowledgeable and polite additions to these conversations. You are quite the gentleman.
Kenny
I have no expert advice but I would mock it up and practice on scraps before doing it for real. Routers are strong and twisty.
There's something about the Ilur that attracts artist boat builders. Beautiful work. Thank you for sharing this build.
I had a good laugh about the hole in your house. You seemed very nonchalant...
Hate to see this end. Thanks for taking us along. That was fun.
Okay, after I just defended your YouTube commenters, I have to bring these up.
One of your comments asked if you could keep the same plank width with the replacement oak, but could you hollow it...
Congrats - She's looking great.
I spent very little effort trying to make the bottom of the hull look pretty. Every now and then when she's on a trailer I notice some of the spots, but if you...
Hey Ben-
Seattle Marine has a 15 pound version. The flukes don't fold but the bar comes out.
About the comparisons.
I think that as time has passed you guys are doing a much better job of answering people's concerns. Also the fact that you now have had years of thoughtful progress has...
Fantastic Project!
I was lucky enough to take the Open Boat Cruising class at the Wooden Boat school last year. The instructor was Geoff Kerr who has spent years and years sailing and...
Great story. It seems like you are getting a lot done.
Never had the problem of spousal jealousy - she likes that I'm out in the garage and she's in the house.
Do you need to be talked into...
When the quarantine started I made a list of all the stuff I never finished. Then I realized: it wasn't lack of time, it was lack of desire. I could have all the time in the world and I would never...
Wow. those are some pictures. Sailing the Caribbean. Just wow.
Wow! So much better than school (and I'm a middle school teacher). I'm jealous - my kids aren't builders. They enjoy using my craft, but never helped in building. Sigh.
Kenny
Hey
Not much to add to the advice above except that you should follow it all. I was unhappy with zip ties - I couldn't get them tight enough. I wish that I had splurged on more hose clamps, even...
Thanks for the thread, Bruce. This is far out of my league but I love your building and writing style.
"Wolverine" is the perfect name!
I don't know if you have life figured out, but it looks...
Holy Cow, David! I just looked up Hansville - you do need a boat! What a fantastic location. When I lived in WA all of my sailing was on Lake Union.
When I built my Navigator I was about the same...
Beautiful choice of boat. I've sailed with a few and they are as fast as they are stylish. And the kit will get you there sooner.
Thanks for taking the time to start the thread. I'll be following...
Wait a minute - you have a wife who sends you out to the shed to build a boat. Then she helps? I think I have a new definition of "keeper." Love your project. You tell a fun story.
In the latest video I loved the interview with the airplane rivet guy. It feels line over the years you have gotten less criticism as you have proven yourselves to be so competent. But still, great...
So glad to see your progress.
I almost hesitate to ask, because you're such a fanatically precise planner, but I have a question about your oarlocks. Are they high enough to get your oars over the...
Thanks again to you all.
CWSmith - I'm bald already, which is everyone's first joke (once they feel comfortable enough to make a joke). With my type of chemo it's not 100% that I'll lose body...
So odd - just a few weeks ago I watched an old old (first or second season) SNL and he was the musical guest. He made some great music.
Thanks for the replies guys. McMike and Skuthorp I'll take all the positive wishes I can get.
Isla - Sorry to hear that you have had such a rough road, but it's an important message for me. I need...
Hi Gang,
I just started chemo yesterday. I've reached out to my hospital's support services but with the virus, things at hospitals aren't functioning as quickly as they normally do. So I turn to...
J.-
Thanks for making this thread. It's been fun to follow along on your build.
When you're through, don't forget to chronicle you adventurers every now and then. We get to watch the build, but...
I've heard this macho stance a few times in the last few days. Fortunately they seem to be in the minority.
Hi Gib
I check in regularly but have nothing to add. I love your work but the purpose of your build is even better.
Kenny
Massachusetts doesn't require registration until you add the motor.
Welcome back, Suzy - you were a big inspiration during my build. Let's get that girl in the water!
Kenny
"Leigh named his daughter Morgan after Morgan Creek Grill."
I truly hope she was named after the creek and not the restaurant!
What a weird article.
John Welsford is very present on the Facebook Welsford page. I think it's the best way to find him.
You've got a great attitude, kg. Good luck on your decisions.
Yeah Mike!! She's beautiful!
Kenny
Congrats Dave!
That interior shot with the kids is really surprising - it's much bigger than I imagined.
Kenny
Very nice. You'd better not give us pictures of a completed Rozinante and say "Look what I did." We want to see the build!
Kenny
80 feet! That's bigger than I remember from PT-109.
Remember when we used to make stuff? That was cool.
I didn't realize you were in Houston - you should contact MoMan:
Pathfinder in Houston
Also, Deke's build shows his version of a main mast slot
Pathfinder in Florida
Good Luck!
Welcome to the family!
Your boat looks beautiful, but we'll need lots more pictures.
In case you haven't been there, you should get on the Welsford facebook page. That's the fastest way to...
Hey Mike-
About the paint, was it on a fiberglassed area? I had my whole bottom peel off with my thumbnail! I hadn't sufficiently scuffed the fiberglassed bottom before painting.
Looking good....
We make such a fuss before we launch, then as soon as we start sailing them they become wonderfully worn in. So don't worry - she looks fantastic!
Kenny
40 years! Longer than most marriages.
I love boat that look like they are used.
Kenny
Wow, she's a beauty! You should be very proud.
And thanks for sharing photos of her in use - it's always a little sad when the build thread ends and we don't get to see the boat in action.
Kenny
But once it's in sideways you can't adjust.
Right?
Thanks for all the advice gents. I'm sure with a few thousand more hours I won't need them, but I'm finding that switching from sloop rig to balanced lug is taking some thought.
Kenny
Good to know. The Windex now comes with a stabby attachment for just that reason.
Hello all
In my unstayed balanced-lug Navigator I miss having telltales.
Anyone have any strong opinions about mast top wind indicators?
If favorable, is there any preference between these...
