Unbalanced lug? Proa style?
Breasthook not required?
Consider:
1) this source, zero experience
That said.
2) flexible epoxy in a seam/kerf wide enough to let the epoxy stretch a bit
Recently I've looked into higher end oar handles and my low effort internet searches showed rubber, foam and wood grips for the most part.
Concept 2 oars, which seem mainly aimed at performance...
Good thread. Many of us have read that varnished grips contribute to blisters but we have testimony that isn't always the case.
I assume that technique, duration and effort play into the equation...
These boats become family, and like family, you love them, nurture them and even have fights with them.
There comes a time to let them go, seeing them prosper gives you joy and seeing them...
Agreed.
The EP Carry is closest to my wants but is a bit too small and has been out of stock every time I've looked.
My bare WRC Greenland paddle is comfortable. On a new set of XPL oars the builder suggested a 50/50 mix of BLO and turpentine on the basswood handles. I applied two coats and they feel good.
The No-Spill brand gas cans have a unique nozzle that actually delivers fuel and stops overfills! Really!
Perfect for a little engine's inboard tank. I have the 1.25 gallon can.
...
What lock(s) do you use?
Ah, the build is progressing, good for you. The fine bow will help, my C-Dory had a rather full bow.
Docking in the wind is tricky with these boats, I could have used a daggerboard or leeboard a few...
I've had a 2.5 Suzuki for a few months. For me it came down to parts availability, noise level and weight.
Even without cooling fins and the fan it is still obnoxious. The sound comes off of the...
To please the eye, it needs to be stretched at least 10% to lessen the visual impact of the house.
If you are going to the effort and expense of building her, a small amount of V is only a couple...
I'd definitely ease the blade edges at least 18" up.
Greenland paddles with their narrow blades work very well with a slightly higher cadence and a bit more cant than conventional paddles. You'll...
Obenauf's leather treatment is my all-time favorite for work boots. No reason it wouldn't show your oars a good time too.
^^^ Like.
Dragon Skin steel sanding sheet is the bomb for shaping dense foam for seats and thigh braces.
Speaking generically, oil can soften leather which can contribute to stretching.
I've used Johnson paste wax and Fluid Film (lanolin spray) with success in my limited use of oar leathers.
Some days I can count, some days not so much.
Upstream I said I had 6 Armstrong hatches... Um. 2 Armstrongs and 4 DPI pull up plates.
Sheesh.
My new boat has six Armstrong hatches. I just ordered some spares from Duckworks last night.
BTW, DW has always given me good service. Y>
Very civilized.
The last boards I bought were clear, plain sawn 12' 1x8 Douglas fir.
$50 each!
Yes, that's the one!
Yeah, I see that. Somewhere I got my wires crossed, thanks for catching it.
If the trailer does not have a tongue jack to lift the tongue in order to test the coupler/ball connection, give the handle a hearty yank.
Paint, just sayin'.
Nick, we appreciate your efforts and generosity.
Happy Birthday, Bob!
Thank you for sharing your considerable knowledge and wisdom with us.
I have some Concept 2 oars with the green hand grips and they feel fine.
The shaft they mount on is .995" diameter. I have no idea if they would be practical for wood oars.
Leather seems like an...
Wouldn't my beloved cabinet scraper take care of the raised grain stickers in a jiffy?
I think the designer is competent, some in the sail racing community have a negative opinion of Mr. McIntyre. I have no opinion on him myself.
As a fast compact cruiser, the boat would be pretty...
Kids...
If you are a subscriber to offcenterharbor.com, Russel Brown has some good videos there too. They are the main reason I subscribed.
Green is the stage when the epoxy has become a solid but is not hard yet. It is easy to cut, scrape, etc. but clogs sandpaper and is toxic to breath the dust. Your fiberglass should slide on it. If...
I have a Ski-Image mirror which helps some, but I really need to work on making a habit of looking over my shoulder regularly.
...
IMO you are creating extra work, mandating a week downtime and giving away the chemical bond.
Green does not equal sticky or even tacky.
I have never pre-coated a panel but if I did, I'd take a cabinet scraper to it while it was still green to knock down any high spots and put on the glass right away.
When I was new to sailing two different people I took out to try sailing ended up buying power boats.
In my defense it was in the Columbia Gorge and to me 25+ knots against the current was just...
Watching with interest. I have eight small boats and should at least sell the 15' dinghy to free up space.
I don't do Facebook so that's out.
Watching Goldfinch with great interest. They are moving very well for a swing keel day sailor.
Money will always benefit racers. What do we do, have income brackets?
The event is about the event. Yes, there is a winner but the R2AK is much more than that.
Most of us have heard of the story of Greenland kayak builders that thought the driftwood they used was some sort of sea creature's bones.
Is that a Coho? I had a heck of a time choosing between the Coho and Arctic Tern. Ended up building 14' and 17' ATs.
Being lazy I chose paint over varnish.
Being a technically better boater that makes foolish, dangerous decisions does not trump discretion and knowing your limitations. It does qualify for the idiot prize though.
Team Mustang Survival, a team of teens average age 16.5 years, had the intelligence and good sense to immediately turn back and they are in a Santa Cruz 27!
My knickers are twisted up in a Gordian knot over reckless people that take 14' daysailers out in storm conditions and invite restrictions on the competent sailors.
It's a good event mostly because of the lack of racing rules and protest committees though its popularity is attracting some who are not up to the challenge.
In addition to the first leg qualifier,...
Quoting myself from another thread:
The Pt. Townsend to Victoria leg being a qualifier seems to have done its job. A bit harsh perhaps but everyone survived, and a strong message was sent.
I'm...

I'm good with the race committee granting an...
Glad to see you pampering her!
For future reference you can remove the bottom leaf to lower the spring rate. The result is a guess but it's an option.
Let me suggest you put a SOR, statement of requirements, together. Be honest, set priorities and include your needed comfort levels.
I got a small sailboat 10 years ago that had marginal comfort at...
