Grundy see your other thread
Good video thanks guys. Did you allow anything for shrinkage when you made up the mould if so how much and was it enough?
Geez Pete careful with my money. I better change that to ... respected
Thanks James, as I understand you've built a few boats so your opinion is valuable, maybe I'll just carry on and get used to it.
Mike, i'll be happy if I achieve half the workmanship you display, but I dont have the patience. Now after I've buttered you up heres a question. which product do you plan on finishing that deck and...
look in once every couple of months and you wont miss much Rick
Thanks Jim, that's exactly the sort of reply I need. I spose you test yours on ice bergs!! When you cut them did you take them down to almost nothing? I know what you mean about making it harder but...
Yeh it's on my wife's bucket list so I have to go too. I'd much rather do some more boat building
Hi Charles, that rate you speak of has now returned to a dribble. I don't think it will be any time before the end of next year so keep breathing. I still have the remaining planks, deadwood, outer...
Hi I am part way through my Grey Seal build and have suddenly realised I am not comfortable with the type of gain that is cut solely in the under plank, where it is planed down to a feather then the...
Hi Skara, yeh you're probably right, in fact in the last pic above (Under the second yellow clamp) you can see an inch wide strip of ply, edge-butt glued to the plank as an experiment and its as...
Thanks for the compliments everyone. Mike, yes I am cutting gains on the fitted plank to full depth, but I think I'll give Peters method a go because I agree with him that it weakens the bottom plank...
And now for the photoholics amongst us I've managed a bit more work and put the fourth set of planks on this weekend. A pic from forward
...
Thanks Tom, I was considering a set of Fuller taper drills but wondered about the suitability of the taper with generally straight screws, you saved me more than a hundredY>Y>
Mal
congratulations on finishing the planking, now I'll let you have one celebratory whiskey then get on with it, no time for sitting around:D
Congratulations on finishing the planking Rik, looks great
Hi Mal, I like those bow shots, looks like a really broad strong hull. Just on your filling and fairing - dunno if you have it already but the BoteCote booklet on epoxy has good material in it and...
Hi Scott love the build and your photos, just wondering what timber you used for the deadwood/keel?
Kip, welcome. When you spile, cut the first bit of ply oversize cos its an art getting spilling right. I've done four planks and still don't trust myself with it so I'm wasting a bit of ply but it's...
Goodonya Rik, is there an outer stem cum keel/skeg to be fitted, if so, do you turn hull over? How far back/under does it go?
Love the shadows, first pic #185, you've done an outstanding job Jim
Rik, I think what you're talking about is a "gain". Where one plank is gradually disappeared into the next depth wise. Have you tried making a gradually increasing saw cut along the edge of where...
Hi Fredrik, that's fantastic that you have won out on the garboard. I am wrapt for you, you must have a real sense of achievement now, the light at the end of the tunnel just got brighter by a whole...
Ed
That layout looks to be a combination of two as drawn. Most GS are custom when it comes to interior. I like that one cos its quite open, although that door looks a fair bit of work.
hi Peter, on your trip to tassie did you manage a visit to Denman Marine and what was the outcome of his strip planking method?
Just when you need steerage the rudder is out of the water! Sad
Here is a shot I use for inspiration, although it is a Kotik design ( from IO ) a stretched Wee Seal

Yep, mac user. Most of my browsing is by iPad (and i bet i'm not the only one) and if you can tell me an easy way on that it'd be great. I also have a pc desktop which is getting traded for an iMac...
Try using a squeegee instead of brush for coating. Much quicker.
None of these is as intuitive, for a computer tolerator, as the "TOP" button that lives at the bottom of page. CAn we please put a "BOTTOM" button. I don't want to view my pages upside down. Musta...
Yes I bet you're using epoxy up like its going out of fashion
Fortunately I can ask my wife to help with them, they'd be a bit of a struggle once they have have the goop on.
Hi Mal, how do you spread epoxy over the planks? That must be such a massive strong way to build the skin of the hull. Bet you can't help yourself thumping on it!!! The transition point to chined...
Hi Peter, the leap took about two weeks full time!
Larks, no the opposite way towards the speedway about a k out of town.
Sorry Rik I meant even if you aren't coating with epoxy before paint. Sand epoxy with 120 grit and paint will stick. If you hot coat epoxy parts ( wait til epoxy is touch dry then recoat again ) then...
Hi Rik, with any ply end grain I'd be coating with epoxy until it won't take any more then paint. Water can get where you can't see so the more protection the better. Even if you aren't coating the...
What's that mast on bowsprit called, must be fun climbing those ratlines
Sounds idyllic John, we are in a major city but where I am building the boat is up country about 1.5 hrs. I will have to get my atlas out and look up your area, it's fun learning about each others...
Looks great John. Makes a change from planking. I can't wait to get started on the framework inside.
Thanks John, are you anywhere near where the Pardeys built Taleisin. I think it is called Bull Canyon. I just read their book by the same name, not a bad read.
Hi Charles, back to normal speed now , odd weekend here and there. Don't need courage for full length planks just space. Still can't guarantee veneers lining up every time though.
Mal, I only...
Here we have completion of six planks, only ten to go and twenty scarfs ( is it scarfs or scarves ) at the turn of the bilge the planks really start to narrow down and the topsides are all fairly...
At the tuck ( is that the right word where the planking dips in? ) of broadstrake and garboard which you can see, just to right of scarf, in this picture I had to change from planing the lap on...
Geez I better learn how to use photoshop:D
This will be great one of my favourite designs, the pilot cutters. Tell ya wot if you fit an engine I'll buy it off ya when ya dun.:)
heres an overhead showing the curve that is being put on the planks so much so that I cracked this one. Most of the crack was cut away when the final shape of plank was cut and I will fill the rest...
before putting garboards on for good i chiseled the moulds back, clear of keelson, for some drip clearance so i can get boat off afterwards...

I took two weeks off work for a serious boat session and drew up a plan. Anyway all started well but it got a bit wobbly by...
Don't know if its the same, my supplemental drawings have "Super Seal" design no 104. Seems to show two rudder designs, an outboard and inboard like Eun Mara. Also an offset centreboard.
I would imagine that you need to learn about spiling which is a technique used to gain the shape of a plank by using a waste piece of thin ply, narrower than the place you need to cover and roughly...
