Before we get back on topic let me throw another log on the fire.
Ian Oughtred's design are lookers. My only complaint is the lack of flotation his open designs have though a builder could address...
My 17' sail-n-oar has the same beam, 67", as Long Steps and rows pretty well with 9' 6" oars and sliding seats.
I got Long Steps study plans from Duckworks. $10 I think.
FWIW I started building my Skerry sprit sail rig immediately before the lug rig became available. I had time to cancel the sprit sail but ended up with an extra spar and gooseneck in the process of...
I went through the boat selection process a couple years ago and can offer some random thoughts which may or may not help.
Welsford's Long Steps is the boat that woke me from my slumber and sent...

I've come to enjoy looking at photography. The online availability is amazing in content and diversity. The world at my fingertips.
Black and white images have become my hands down...
I've built and modified a few boats to near perfect.
We've all seen workboats we admired. If there is a next build, it will be finished to good workboat level. The boat's lines and smart color...
Duckworks had one line they recommended for mainsheets. It's light, has a good hand and doesn't soak much water which is great when the main sheet gets dunked. I can't remember its name but then they...
I have a raid braid halyard on one of my boats with a balanced lug. It's good line, especially for the price. As that boat's downhaul is quick and easy to adjust (cam cleat and multipart tackle), I...
I took another look at the plans after reading Nick's post. The hull has hard chines and a squared off transom near the waterline, it may be the fabled semi-displacement hull form. Not sure if the...
To oversimplify, there are 2 1/2 kinds of hulls.
1) Planing hulls which will climb up on and skim across the water given enough power.
2) Displacement hulls, yours, which will move efficiently...
If you would rather sail than plane planks, I see two mentioned above that stick out to me.
The Wayfarer, lots of them built and can be found in all sorts of condition. B&B Yacht Designs stand out...
Maybe longer wedges with a more acute angle? Some sort of grippy paint or coating on them? B:?
My lug rig with a wooden mast has a square step and partner. The one with an aluminum mast is round. On that one I protect the paint in the way of the partner with clear helicopter tape. Other than...
Dories have a great reputation, some of that reputation has been earned, some assigned from sea tales and urban legend.
Of course, their shape and suitability for recreational rowing varies greatly....
A little banter is good clean fun.
Add a lapped sheer plank to replace the rotted ply and paint it a contrasting color. Now it's a feature, not a defect!
I'm a huge fan of using a cabinet scraper on green epoxy vs. sanding. It saves time, expensive sandpaper and eliminates epoxy dust. Likely after the scraper you will find areas that need touched up...

Suspect I'd try sandals first. Beware of closed toe sandals which are in reality brilliant gravel traps.
I may soon be in the market as well. Have a farmer john wetsuit and paddling top for now.
There are multi-layer composite suits that would not provide the in-water protection of a dry suit but have...
I'm impressed!
A conversion can be done. I converted a small boat designed for sail & oar but only built to row.
That hull looks like a slippery rowboat, I would not butcher her. Give her some loving maintenance...
Novice.
Todd is very generous with his knowledge and has helped many with his commonsense solutions.
In spite of your trollish immaturity, he gave you some very good life advice when he told you to...
Your angst, while understandable for a novice, is unfounded. The basics have been worked out for some time.
A reasonably well-built rig given basic maintenance is safe.
May I suggest you are making more work and creating more complexity for yourself by trying to force a hull to go beyond its design envelope. Designing a boat is a careful balance of many elements....
The going price is 15+ years of your life and your marriage.
My takeaway from this and another current thread is we need a stickie telling everyone to think 2+' longer!
I still have my 15-footer, but it has not been used since the arrival of my 17-footer.
How bad is, really, getting a boat registered? Sub 14' and passengers is quite intimate.
IMO the chances of an amateur improving on a Joel White design are slim at best. Trust his top-notch reputation.
Do you like the Greenland paddle?
After building mine I converted from feathered to non-feathered Euro style paddles to keep muscle memory and technique the same when bracing and rolling with all...
The Columbia River's water is thoroughly mixed up by dams, yet it produces epic waves especially in the Gorge.
Old gasoline sitting in the carburetor gums up the passages and jets, even worse it can cause corrosion.
Use fuel stabilizer. Techron is brilliant at dissolving gum, way better than old school Sea...
Russel Brown has a couple inexpensive ebooks. One on working with epoxy, much of which is in the West System books by the Gougeun Bros. but brought to life with illustrations and his experience. The...
Or Bristol, and, just how Bristol?
Bristol stool scale - Wikipedia
It is easy to measure suspension sag. Jack the frame enough to just take the weight off the axle and measure the height of the boat or frame from the floor or axle. Compare to same measurement...
Those rollers are tough. Do the new compartments have ventilation options?
^^^ Nicely done!
Some people don't feel comfortable adjusting the spring stack or tire pressure but knowing the basics will keep you out of trouble.
Examples follow.
One of my boat trailers is rated at 800# gross...
Do you know it is epoxy? Did you put it there?
What sort of boat do you have? Does the trailer have torsion or leaf springs? What size tires?
There are a few eye-opening dinghy self-recovery videos floating around that will encourage dinghy owners to consider adequate flotation.
Example.

Well??? :D
They are new to the market. PM sent.
It seems to me that radiused edges that hold their coating and aren't as fragile as hard corners are more practical for the everyday schmuck.
I have two 8' sets of Barkley Sound Oars. They are nice production oars for the price. The pair with curved blades were dropped off at the consignment chandlery yesterday.
Do a simple dinghy first. It will not only be a good education but will keep you from making as many expensive, time-consuming mistakes on your destination boat.
Good luck!
Unfortunately, Feathercraft closed its doors and no longer makes the very high-quality, light weight Baylee series inflatable raft. Or for that matter, their inflatable kayaks.
I have a Baylee 3 HD...
