Kieth at Esay creek Lumber is a good guy too, and can put his hands on some nice timber but the prices he had were 6-7/ft and no salvage in stock

I just bought some beutiful clear AYC from an outfit called ARC wood and timbers out of the bay area Ca. 5$ a foot. It's salvaged material which makes one feel almost good about spending the money....

I do this all the time with the stern ends of planks on whitehalls. especialy in the hollow area at the base of the transom. It works well, using a set of curved blocks and a clamp. you can also use...
I have bent a fair bit of cherry, It bends toerably well, but the species is prone to slightly bouncy/woven grain that produces micro runout even on a piece where the overall run of the grain is...
I am about to do a complete replanking on a 34'tug for the Lake Champlain Maritime musuem, and good longleaf pine would be pretty ideal. Timing and shipping might be tricky, but I would certainly be...

generaly speaking laps are twice planking thickness
I would certainly try for quarter sawn boards when planking in any hardwood. But flat sawn locust isn't too bad for cupping and movement. The last set I did were scrfed togetehr using recorcinal...
I have done garboards for 16-18' boats in Black locust with great satisfaction. it steams quite well, and is MUCH more stable than oak which is commonly used.
Locust is decidely not a good choice for cold molding. It takes epoxy only moderstey well, becomes brittle in thin planks, and is virtually unavailable in long clear material of any volume.
Build...
-Both work well, but there are several advantages to the domed roves:
-They are easier to avoid damg/dimples to the surrounding plank while forming the head, since it has been raised slightly up and...
I have an old friend boat building in Corvalis who is certainly capable of doing the job, and he won't mind you watching/helping. Let me know if you would like his phone number
You will likely have to fair it with scrapers and abrasives. Cherry gets alot of woven grain and with thin strips a lift could be bad. It's great stuff. has good rot resistance, doesn't bend all that...
I don't know if it will work for your application but generally silica and graphite make for a tough low friction surface. I suspect portl;and cement will be a bit too chemically reactive to mix in...
I us elocust for for just about evertyhting I can. CB no problem. With any CB it is best to use verticle grain for the obvious concerns of warp. Since the whole thing gets through bolted (usualy)...
Red cedar is a lot more brittle, and may have a harder time taling the bend. I would certainly try to find qurter sawn stock...far less likely to split
"comperable or better than white oak" was refering to the species strenth and stability, not the rot resitance, which is significantly poorer than oak's.
-I would be leary of using the species in...
a good douse with linseed oil and turps never hurts
It depends on the suface condition of the boat. Paint is compatabli with oil/tar, but if you have a thick soft layer of the stuff, you will need to scrub back down to wood. Oil miztures are not meant...
I think mahgony will be a bit too soft and brittle for a reliable cleat

Spruce rots pretty easy, you could use it to plank a light boat that is well cared for and stored dry.....
Hardwoods of boat use in the area: Black Locust, white oak (down south), Black Cherry,...
I would use an epoxy for the laminations if your going that route.
-I think you may have trouble running planking stock that thin through power equipment like a shaper....it may just disintegrate,...
As far as ease of tightening, it probobly wont matter much. A threaded bolt in combination with a good long wrench produce massive force, and you should have a number of bolts to spread the load out...
HI Noah,
go easy on the keel bolts depending how long she has been out of the water. In fact, I would wait at least a week after launching before I touched them to let things swell back up first....
The real question is where will the boat be stored/living? If you are keeping her in the water, you will want the planking swelled up some(alot below waterline) before you putty, otherwise just what...
I run into this problem alot when working with cherry. For the most part I have found that the color variation evens out over time, with the freshly exposed light material oxidizing much faster than...
-Another option:
-If you are in no rush and everything is running fair. Just leave it for a week or two. wood has memory. Given time the piece will develop a set and relieve some of the pressure....
Generaly speaking, when bending a plank in place, you want to clamp or fasten it at the stem first, with the plank sticking out and way from the boat. This lets you get the hood end well seated which...
-True, it isn't hard to twist the frames of a small boat to remove the cant. Or you can lay the in "fisherman style" and let them run where they will. To predict this run rip a batten of the same...
There is a mueseum in the 'daks more or less dedicated to the boats...blue lake somethign or other. Traditonaly they were planked with white pine on grown spruce root frames. Folks now are planking...
Burled wood is beautiful, but completely non-structural. Sorry.
Completely forgot about Mustad, right you are. The problem roves I have seen came out of England. Don't want to bad mouth the wrong folks!
Are we taking about checks or shakes? Checks will intercept the growth rings at 90 degrees shakes will be growth rings showing seperation. Shakes are usually more indicitive of wind stress or poor...
- The rove should certainly be a drive fit. I like 3/8 roves for 12ga nails. There is only one manufactureer of the square nails and domed roves. And for awhile they were over punching the roves for...
If you have cedar planks checking something is not right. ceadr is about as well behaved as wood gets in that regard. Most likely the checks were already there and are revealing themselves as the...
BRU
-I try to let it cure a little longer than that .....maybe 4-6 days if you have the time. You can varnish sooner...but the uncured oil can cause the varnish to stay tacky longer.....dust...
-I have to disagree with wayne. Use Boiled oil. It will not cure fast enough to disrupt penatration if you are applying it just once. and will cure much faster than raw if you plan to over coat...

Battens for lining off should approximate the thickness of the planking. and are usually 50-100% wider than thick. Ideally they should be made from the same material as your planking or one very...
- Sorry to say this but You are dreaming if you think you will get a "ship auger" to burrow a straight hole through 3' of oak. It will deflect. The screw point will find a path of lesser resistance...
I have done several boats out of the book. a couple of Whitehalls, a couple of CT River Drag Boats (one in construction right now), and some melonseeds. It's a great resource for alot of boat types...
