Thorne, where can I buy one like that?
Once you've used whatever to get a nice radius on your fillets and used a scraper/chisel to remove the excess on either side you will still find after it's all hardened that you missed something or...
I've used Epiphanes with great success on several cedar strip kayaks and the bright work on my dinghy. I always get a mirror finish with few runs. I never thin it and I use plain old foam brushes...
The Goat Island Skiff was my original inspiration but I just couldn't get used to the slab sides. I've built a seven strake boat before (glued lapstrake) so I kinda started there. No drafting or...
She will be just over 15' 6" and 4' wide. The lug sail will be about 75sq. feet. A little tender maybe? We'll see. That's not the breasthook you see, it's just distortion from having the camera very...
OK, here goes. http://i1356.photobucket.com/albums/q731/darwinatsea/13_zps7422f1f9.jpg http://i1356.photobucket.com/albums/q731/darwinatsea/21_zps519b14b0.jpg...
A few more bits added and pics uploaded to Photobucket. I still haven't been able to figure out how to attach the pics (I know you've done your best, I'm just challenged!!!). Maybe I'll try Flikr.
Can you post a larger pic of the trailer please. Thanks.
OK. I've opened a Photobucket account. Here's the url - http://s1356.beta.photobucket.com/user/darwinatsea/library/
Does that work?
Hi Nick and Merry Christmas,
I see you're in Cumbria. I remember Cumbria before it was Cumbria, that's how old I am. Wonderful memories of the Lake District, Threlkeld etc. But I digress.
I'll...
I've been messing with this for several months now but have finally got started. The design (I use the word in its broadest possible sense) is derived from the Goat Island skiff, Joansa, Laughing...
Pictures?
Forgot to mention that I already have frames cut to build my own Nikumi when other projects permit. I've built several SOF baidarkas before and, although a little narrow, never found them tippy. Fast...
The Nikumi is an Aleutian style boat and you should consider making an Aleutian style paddle. Google MAE-593-76 and look at the paddle at the bottom of the plans.
Good luck.
5/8 is way too thick for a canoe. 1/4 should be more than adequate.Whose plans are you using? What strip thicness do they specify? Have you thought of picking the best of the knotty cedar and using...
Looks like something I'll just have to buy. But here's the thing. After I broke a blade in my jig saw I discovered I can cut 16 foot strakes from 1/4 inch plywood using a cheap Japanese utilty saw...

Ask Tom Yost. You'll find him very helpful.
Thanks for all the comments. It's good to know how it behaves in real life as opposed to my imagination. I think I'll stick with the basic Flapjack design but still with a few minor mods. And I...
I love my Acorn. The lines are beautiful and she rows like a dream. This time around I want what I believe is sometimes called a beach cruiser. Something that sails reasonable well, rows nicely, will...
I have plans for the Whisp also. A very nice design and little more curve in the stem makes it very attractive.
Since my first post I've been sketching (actually more like doodling) and I've...
I've been studying the Flapjack plans and just realized how little freeboard this boat has. OK for rowing but is it enough for sailing? Unless it's sailed upright I can imagine water coming aboard...
Thanks again Steve,
I just ordered the sail book. I'll keep in touch.
Roy.
Thanks Steve,
Do you have any pics?
Roy.
I've had plans for the Flapjack for many years and now have the space and time to think about starting to build. I'm thinking of making it with a lug rig and wonder if anyone else has ever done this...
I have one of these

Also, check out the Aircraft Spruce website.
The secret to no runs for the initial wet out has more to do with proper squeegee technique than the viscosity of the resin. For the fill coats try scraping your runs with a good sharp scraper, sand...
I've been using Greenland and Aleut paddles for years and wouldn't dream of going back. Having said that, I know it's a love them or hate them sort of world. But you have to try.
Beautiful job. Dumb question - why do you use a pocket with bungee cord and another with rope in it? Wouldn't the lower skirt with rope work just as well on it's own? It's not as if you have a lot of...
Take a look at Iain Oughtred's Acorn 15.
When I installed the brass half oval on my Acorn I used a thin strip of hardwood to apply the bending force and prevent kinking at the hole locations.
My fenders are made of Leoflex. Look at the pic under Acorn 15 finished.
I cut myself so often that a small jab with a needle won't do it! BTW, look very carefully at the pic in the link and you can see a bronze name plate on the transom with my wife's name.
...
Steve, you make me feel ashamed. Here's the plan - I buy the fabric, measure, cut and start to sew. SWMBO sees me, assumes I'll screw things up and takes over. In my dreams!!!
Anyway, a good link...
Thanks Steve,
That looks like the way to go. Now I have to sweet talk SWMBO.
Now that my Acorn 15 is finished I'm thinking I need a cover. Any recommendations as to the best?
Thanks in advance.
Hi dhic101
I don't have a stern view yet but I will take one at the first opportunity. I have to admit, it does have a rather attractive rear end!!
Chip-skiff,
The bronze eye in the breasthook for the mooring line is actually a thru hull fitting with most of the threaded part cut off. I used two more in the transom for the aft lines.
Tom...
Thanks everyone, my ego is now satisfied, at least for a little while!
TimT - the trailer is from Castlecraft. Comes in boxes, you bolt it together and make it fit your boat.
WCM - both the top...
Just have to add water and stir. Problem is I have tried and failed (miserably and many times) to attach a picture. If someone else can post the picture for me I would really appreciate it. If there...
Thanks Andreus,
Home made it is. And it only took 10 minutes!
It's looking very much as if the u build option is the way to go. Wish me luck and hope that Monday is a good day to catch government officials in a good mood.
It's an idea Steve but it took several hous to put together. I don't want to go through that again. Someone an another forum suggested that I should stop saying I bought a trailer from the US....
Thanks Salty D,
From what you left out, I'm guessing he drove from Peace Arch to Campbell River without a plate for the trailer. Am I right or wrong (the most likely case).
Thanks,
Roy.
I have run into a problem trying to get a license plate for my Castlecraft trailer. The boxes of parts (the kit) was cleared through canadian customs by UPS and duty and taxes were paid. However, it...
Take a look at the pics in this thread

I hope this question isn't considered hijacking. I have just finished applying the first two coats of varnish to the brightwork on my dinghy. For want of a better way of putting it, it's "bright"....
For the lines on my Acorn I've bought Leoflex from American Rope and Tar. Looks good and feels good. (no affiliation).
Excellent information. Just what I was looking for. Thanks.
I'm getting near to finishing my Acorn 15 and want to put a small bronze nameplate on the transom with the boat name, build year and perhaps (pure vanity) my name. I can't find anything searching the...
