  1. Re: Converting this small wooden boat into a casual sailor

A quick update to this old thread, I've decided I'll inject the laminate with epoxy in places the veneers have de-laminated internally. This obviously isn't a propper fix, but I'm thinking it will...
  2. Shadow in wood/varnish behind picture

On the interior of our boat, one of our bulkheads had pictures in frames hung by the previous owner. After many years, this has left a clear outline of where the picture was hung. I'm not sure if the...
  3. Re: Converting this small wooden boat into a casual sailor

Honestly, I don't know a lot about hull shapes for a boat this size. If I'm using it as a mold though, I'd want to make the changes discussed earlier in the thread. Beef up the keelson and add...
  4. Re: Converting this small wooden boat into a casual sailor

I did some more drilling today, and found that in some sections on the bottom of the boat, the outer layer is nearly 0.4-0.5" separated from the next layer. I don't know if I want to go through the...
  5. Re: Converting this small wooden boat into a casual sailor

Could I strip plank over an existing hull? I can't see why not, but I might be missing something obvious/dumb. Or maybe the curves are too challenging for a strip plank?

It might be hard to clamp...
  6. Re: Converting this small wooden boat into a casual sailor

Yeah, I still might go either way on this. It does sound like a project I would really enjoy -- building the boat from scratch. But it's also a pretty big investment in my most precious resource...
  7. Re: Converting this small wooden boat into a casual sailor

You know, that's not a terrible idea.

Given that the original boat has a keel/stem, how could I incorporate this if using the existing hull as a mold. I could certainly cut the existing keel/stem...
  8. Re: Converting this small wooden boat into a casual sailor

I routed a bunch of holes along the side of he hull to get an idea of the extent of the delamination. Unfortunately, it's probably 50/50 on the holes I drilled, so definitely not confined to the bow....
  9. Re: Converting this small wooden boat into a casual sailor

Good feedback from both of you. I guess I wasn't so much questioning the overall construction yet, but assuming that the bow was damaged in some way that allowed water to enter and compromise the...
  10. Re: Converting this small wooden boat into a casual sailor

I'm not sure I'm ready to give up on it yet. Are there ways I can inspect the rest of the hull for delamination -- like routing out small sections of the outer layer -- before throwing in the towel? ...
  11. Re: Converting this small wooden boat into a casual sailor

I went at it today a bit more aggresively, and used my router to carve out a few sections of the outer planks that felt delaminated.

Unfortunately the situation appears to be worse than a simple...
  12. Re: Converting this small wooden boat into a casual sailor

That's a good idea too. One thing I'll need to figure out is how dirty the interstitial cavity is (betweent he laminations). Maybe I can blow some air and flush it with denature alcohol Does it make...
  13. Re: Converting this small wooden boat into a casual sailor

Probably not good that it's dry, or probably not good in regards to the delam?

For the delam, I've read of people drilling (many) small holes and injecting epoxy to re-bond the layers that have...
  14. Re: Converting this small wooden boat into a casual sailor

I did a cursory sanding down (in the time I had before it started raining) of one of the gapped pieces of planking to inspect the wood underneath, and it appears to be very dry. So that's good. It...
  15. Re: Converting this small wooden boat into a casual sailor

Lucky for me, I've sanded/scraped a 27' full-keel boat all the way down through its layers of paint (including layers of bottom paint) and gelcoat, so anything sounds like a walk in the park compared...
  16. Re: Converting this small wooden boat into a casual sailor

Boat acquired! It definitely needs some work to get her back in a reasonable condition. Notably there are some cracks along the wood lines on the exterior near the bow. It also looks like there may...
  17. Re: Converting this small wooden boat into a casual sailor

I decided to pull the trigger. It was $150, and hard to say no to. Given that there's no rot or leaks, in the worst case I pretty it up and have a nice little row boat, maybe we could even use it as...
  18. Re: Converting this small wooden boat into a casual sailor

John, as in re-enforce the area with glassed in wood before cutting through? Would it also make sense to install a few ribs, with one in this area to more evenly distribute the forces from the trunk...
  19. Re: Converting this small wooden boat into a casual sailor

Yes! I'll definitely need to be borrowing from other designs here, so bring them on.

As for mounting the daggerboard off-center -- would a sufficiently built and re-enforced trunk not be able to...
  20. Converting this small wooden boat into a casual sailor

There's a small wooden boat available nearby at basically a give-away price. It looks like it's a cold molded construction, and just needs some cosmetic love, and maybe a few repairs to the rub rail....
  21. Re: Advice on ocean-crossing pocket cruisers

Enjoyed the build photos of Blow Fish, Geoff. What are your cruising plans for her? She seems like a capable little boat.
  22. Re: Advice on ocean-crossing pocket cruisers

I think the reason I'm leaning toward cold-molded or strip-planking is a consequence of what I've been exposed to in the research I did before I bought my current boat, and from experiences along my...
  23. Re: Advice on ocean-crossing pocket cruisers

I've done the whole, "go small, go now" thing. I didn't even know how to sail when I bought my current boat, and was baptized quickly in salty offshore passages. I'm glad I did it that way. I got to...
  24. Re: Advice on ocean-crossing pocket cruisers

Some of these suggested boats are really fantastic and are opening my eyes to a world of plans I didn't know existed.

Annie is beautiful and seems to be an almost perfect candidate.

    The...
  25. Advice on ocean-crossing pocket cruisers

For the past few years, I've lived and sailed on an old 27' GRP boat full-time, covering thousands of miles offshore. For a variety of reasons, though, I will have to sell this boat soon, and return...
