Yes, this is the original test panel from the first post repurposed for ring sewing practice.
This is good information. I’ve had a copy of the Sailmaker’s Apprentice on and off my bookshelf for two decades-ish, and have recently been doing more reading to try to see if it were truly feasible...
Tape basting is the plan. Would V92 be called for for corner patches? Or would two lines of V69 work there too? Again, looking at a 240 sq ft mainsail.
And thanks again for the all the...
Are there any objective measures for how close is too close together for stitches? The machine seems to struggle a bit as I get to the longest stitch width/length (ie, so many mm between)? In the...
Thanks to all for the knowledge. The internet provided the service manual for my machine, and I increased the tension for both bobbin and needle, and tried again with V69 thread with a 100/16...
Thanks to all for the feedback. I will see what can be done with adjusting the tension and thread lubrication. Are there recommendations for type of needle in addition to size? Basic sharps seem...
Investigating the art of the possible, I ran some 7.4 oz Dacron sailcloth through my trusty Singer 4432. The thread size is V92, needle is a Singer universal size 110/18. Messed around a bit with...
Looking at fabrication of a spinnaker pole for my 1960 design Alden sloop (30 ft LOA). The plans call for South Coast SC-400 #3 pole end fittings, which are unavailable (only place I found them...

Thanks for the suggestions, I have a request into the Smithsonian, whose archives appear to have both Merriman and Wilcox. Haven't found anything on South Coast yet, ebay had an old price list, but...
In planning to do some work on my boat, I was able to track down the drawings and notes, but all hardware is referenced to the 1960 Merriman Brothers, Wilcox-Crittenden, and South Coast hardware...

I put a coat of penetrating epoxy over the entire hull prior to using an epoxy barrier coat below the waterline. It seemed to work pretty well as far as priming and sealing. The topside paint is...
And back swimming again. Seemed to take up pretty well.
And topside and bottom paint go on. Pulling tape off a sharp paint line is very satisfying.
and after much stripping, sanding, cleaning, penetrating epoxy, and cajoling seam compound into place, mostly ready for paint:
Thanks to all for the help, guidance, and interest. It is reassuring to have a supportive community.
Ended up hauling at Everett and doing some hull preservation that turned out pretty good. ...
Thank you to all for the help, I am expanding my search now. Unfortunately, I'm not back in Seattle in time for either Wooden Boat festival this year, but they are on the calendar for next year!
Thank you for the suggestions, and well understood on the humility. It is a bit of a daunting prospect, and I will be conscious of my limitations. Planning will continue, and I will see what I can...
Hello, first post to the forum, I’ve enjoyed and learned from reading for a few months now.
Spring of 2018, I purchased a 1960 Alden design sailboat built in Maine in 1972 named Odyssey, and...
