Hi All, I am nearly completed building my Haven 12 1/2 and working on rigging, standing and running. I understand the set up for the jib club, single block to port and the sheet on the fore deck but...
I feel sure that you figured this out by now but what I did was to put a small length of wooden dowel rod into the existing bolt hole and then used a spade bit
Hi All, I am building a Haven 12 1/2 and nearing completion. I am thinking about my mast and spars and wondering a couple of things. First I should say that I am in Northwest Missouri. I suppose...
I subscribe to two rules and have recently made up my own third one. 1, measure twice, cut once. 2. If it looks good, it probably is. and my own new rule is, 4. Don't screw it up!
Love a channel cutter. dang. my dream boat. do you have a youtube channel? Will you be posting videos anywhere? thanks!
Hi All, I haven't posted much progress on here in a while and I have done more this summer than normal. I figure you might be interested to see how this is coming along. ...
Hi All, I am just about ready to bolt on my lead keel to my Haven 12 1/2. Maynard Bray's book suggest coating the lead ballast with white lead and then using tarred felt between the lead and the oak...
Perfectly awesome! Thanks Steven. I have watched you guys from the start. Messages with Alix today about the wooden boat show. Cheers!
thanks Jeff, I love your documentary threads. I will explore more soon. I can't imagine doing this upside down. holy smoke! You are correct in that your keel is nearly identical to mine. I build my...
I'm building a Haven 12 1/2 and using a white oak that I cut down on my farm. There is something extra special about this!
I am struggling to find the episode where the Acorn to Arabella fellas actually drill the lead. Do you happen to know which episode?

Hi All, I am getting ready to drill holes in my newly poured lead ballast keel. This is for my Haven 12 1/2. The lead, at its thickest part is about 6 inches. I must drill down through my...
Ha, Mike, I do believe that's me. lol I feel this guys pain. Just about the time you get good at it you don't need to do it any more
Yes she is a Haven 12 1/2. I strayed from the traditional planking and cold molded as she will live more on the trailer rather than moored. However the floors are bolted to the oak keel and frames...
This has been a strange Spring in the mid-west. Normally by now my boat building has come to a grinding halt. But, the weekend was very productive.37740377413774237743
my guess is that this outside planking is WRC. It can and will come in a variety of color shades, such as what you've got. The cold molding I recently did had as much variation

After the white oak scarf failed, I decided to go with Douglas Fir. I was able to order a Select/Prime 2 x 6 x 16 and ripped out three pieces that could be used for the sheer clamp. Two of these are...
my immediate thought is that she should rest on her keel primarily but I will defer to other more experienced minds.
I love this project, Leo and his crew. I support him on Patreon and I would encourage others to do so as well. Oh if I was but a bit younger! I think the thing that constantly amazes me is the level...
In another thread some folks expressed interest in seeing pictures of my Haven 12 1/2, "Enchanted", a Joel White version of the H 12. This project is well into two years at this point but I have...
Bright star! I need a smoke...
don't want to hijack the thread but here is a recent picture the day before we lifted and flipped. 36123
for what it might be worth Buek, I used Epifanes, two part epoxy, but this is cold molded, so...
Buek, nice to find somebody on here so close. I moved my Pearson from Rock Creek Marina over to Smithville where we sail. I am building a Haven 12.5 and somebody yesterday suggested that the H28...
Kansas? Topeka, Lake Perry, maybe? Hell, I bought my Pearson Triton from an old sailor at Perry. Where are you? I live just north of Kansas City, MO
I love Lou! he has another video where he sets up a circular saw with a way to do a progressive bevel too. What a guy. I hadn't seen this video, I will check it out, thanks!
Wow, I'm loving it! No idea on the wood
Mike, Jay may have just searched me out a bit and seen some video. I am doing a whole series as I have been routinely frustrated with M. Bray's book and figure that if anyone else would want to try...
Thanks Jay! I was not aware of the H28 being an enlarged version. I was pretty sure that the Buzzard Bay was somewhat similar and no, I haven't sailed the 12 1/2. I have several other boats...
yes, the Haven 12 1/2 is the Joel White centerboard version of the H 12 1/2
Thanks Jay. I thought about just putting it in without beveling and planing off the tops but the trick is the after sections. The coaming fits to the inboard face in the cockpit area and so must be...
Hi All, I am getting ready to cut the bevel in sheer clamp. I have taken all of the bevel angle measurements and so I know that this will be a rolling bevel, the length of the sheer line. I have...
I am seeing some different opinions, which I appreciate and expected. I am considering all of your thoughts and expertise. There seems to be concern for the hull’s stiffness. I have built previously...
Thank you all so much! I think the consensus is cold mold and then epoxy the inside. I closed the hull today. What a kick!
They are not bead and cove, neither are they beveled (much, a little when it seemed really necessary) I think epoxy would get between in a lot of places and glue a lot of strips together
No, I have not glued all. Some Titebond III has been used in the ends and other places throughout where needed to keep strips in place. Most all is held to frames, stem, transom and floors with screws
I'm using 9mm okume ply for the planking, sapele for the transom, keel, and various other bits, and a fair bit of black locust was used in the stem, transom knee, c/b trunk, etc. The black locust I...
I learn something new everyday (when I'm paying attention) I did not know what a Beg Meil is. Google is a wonderful thing. Beautiful!! I went to your link but I don't think I saw any, very recent...
thank you! I find myself just standing and looking at her lines. Truly a beautiful design
That is how I'm leaning for the inside, epoxy and then paint over it for the UV. What do you think about adding a veneer, cold molded over the outside? OR, could I be ok to just heavily fiberglass?...
Hi All, I am building Joel White's, Haven 12 1/2. Largely because this boat will generally live on a trailer, I decided to cedar strip plank it and fiberglass. I am fastening the strips to the steam...
I built an 8 foot long box out of cheap white pine using 1x6 and I bent all of my white oak for the frames on the Haven I'm building. Used the wallpaper steamer and it worked well.
I am thinking to build a scorpio style kayak, are there plans available or a plan for strip construction that would be similar to this production kayak?
[QUOTE=Dave Lesser;5182500]This may get some howls.
WB #231 (March-April 2013) has an article about Artisan Boatworks glued edge carvel construction. They used a laminated backbone and laminated...
Yes,

I had spent the $50 and joined the Haven builders website and forum when I first started. I found it somewhat disappointing. I will still go back and look for other builds and advice as my knowledge...
No, not just the molds, oak frames are steamed bent and on. That part was a new but fun part.
Good grief, that terrible, So what did you do to fix your Haven?
I built a solid mast for a Demon 15 out of Douglas Fir. I bought 6 eight foot 2 x 4's and epoxied them together and then power planed them down to round. This mast is almost 22 ft. I sailed it last...
