What about a vinyl bladder??
Looking fantastic Greg. You were worried about all the different Timbers but I didn’t notice that at all. Your workmanship is outstanding. Hopefully your contract doesn’t extend endlessly so you can...
I’m thinking a 3 or 4 ft torture board (run in a for/aft plane, representing next plank) to sand the bevel so it goes in a fair curve may be easier than planing it Ian ?? My 2c cos I’ve never done it...
Well done Ian. It’s always a pity that the most difficult plank is the first, why is that?
Merry Xmas and have a great sailing new year to you and Alison
Starting to get very exciting Ian, I bet you’re looking fwd to getting out in shed for the first plank fitting? I look fwd to that posting.
A lot of boats sit that long in build in worse conditions. I’d be following the paint companies directions. Have you actually run a moisture meter over the planks? May not be as dry as you imagine.
Thanks for the pictures Ian. She’s coming along nicely. It will be rewarding to get full length planks out. I’ll have to see if we can get that Sika291 Wood colour here.
It’s great that Covid...
So much stuff. Can’t have enough lockers by the looks. When the time comes I’ll be looking back here to make sure I haven’t forgotten to take account of my stuff. I remember my last boat the stuff...
I use raptor plastics for glue ups when positioning is crucial and I can dispense with screws and the soldering iron to get em out. Perimeter and field of large panels such as cabin-top was a good...
Good to see you having a great time Ian. That bridge must have been some climb. Doubt I’d make it!
Thanks for the video Greg. A video gives a much better sense of scale, your mum will be happy. Things are coming along very nicely. I wish I had some of your finesse with details but as you know a...
I’m attaching my handrails with csk head screws from inside cabin through the deck beams so then it’s flush inside. Only prob is guessing where the screws go through :( Epoxy will be my choice of...
Congratulations Thomas, she looks fantastic. Thanks for the launch photos. Now for retirement and sailing her full time.
thanks for the compliments Jim. I’m 5’10” + and can sit comfortably in the aft part of cabin where I have the quarter berths/seats. Any other questions please don’t hesitate
I just found sail area =...
Condolences to Walt’s family. I enjoyed following along this thread and it’s a shame he didn’t get to complete it. May he Rest In Peace. Good Bye Walt.
I see them now Ian. Setting up those planking battens looks like fun :o
Lucky you’re not building an epoxy boat with that weather. Next you’ll get icebergs.
Can’t see pictures in #95 Ian, but I can in other posts up the page ????
It must be a relief to have your timber sorted and the transom looks really good. I can’t imagine what a workout your tape measure is getting!!! I’ve gone and bought a Moto Guzzi so it’ll be a...
Love that first photo on #959. Good news about the motor, can Alison start it?
Mark aka mazlaysia, you may be better off starting a new thread, you’ll get more exposure if you phrase it correctly.
Hi Alex, question for you.. I looked back at your deck non-skid (Kiwi Grip) application post in #580 and I was wondering if you apply it over your normal topcoat or the undercoat? Do you apply the...
One advantage of the through-cabin mast is that it’ll stay put while you deal with stays etc. I’ll read through the rest of this thread for more tips I can steal. Happy cruising Bruce.
Congrats Alex, may you have many enjoyable voyages in her. You’ve done a fine job
By geez Ian, all the boats you’ve built over the years worth of experience seems to have come to nought with this boat. You’ve certainly started a new curve of learning it seems. I hope you have some...
I had to laugh at that last photo Pablo. Take the boys out for a sail but they bought their electronics along too. Tis the day and age. At least we can appreciate the surroundings in your photos
Looking very special Greg. That’s a lucky boat to have found you.
looking fantastic - you’ll have a great time at Pt Townsend. That cabin looks very snug, I can imagine brewing a coffee and looking out at surroundings.
Is that a tricolour at mast head Alex?...
Just be aware Alex, that is the glue that foams when it has a gap to expand into or out of. The expanded foamy residue doesn’t have much strength so your wood needs to be a good fit. I used it on my...
Must feel good to have the keel done. That glue was made for steamed members, means not waiting for timber to dry out. Best of luck for sorting your timber search Ian.
Always someone to rain on your parade but I see his point looking back. Do we have to wait for an answer Greg?
I see, he’s gonna fit the roof panels in between beams then one last over the top. :D
Thats exactly it but better. Ask him to put a thread on it so you can put your heavy weather mast in:D
No, a real carved snakes head, when I first saw photo it resembled a snake about to strike.
Are there bolts in there? Do you have the plans? Maybe shoot someone who’s building/built one a query? I’d be getting it swelled before tightening bolts too.
Steve , I did think of lightboards but my rigging doesn’t line up well enough for/aft and the wiring…. that’s a big prob with a trailersailer. Batteries , hmmmm, with water…hmmmm
Not a lot of...
That tiller needs a cobras head. Nicely done.
One prob with bow is that the arcs won’t be correct. Also they’ll be dunked fairly regularly.
With the partners, could you turn up ( hopefully you have access to a lathe) a rebated collar to epoxy into existing so that lip is on top.
I know what you mean about lights at night Greg. I believe one should could keep a good lookout cos the other guy prob can’t see you - bit like riding a motorbike
No pulpit.
Both good points Dave & Peter, I hadn’t thought about it that much, glad I asked.
I’m having heaps of trouble posting, any one else?
”you don’t have permission, refresh” etc etc
it sorta times out in about 30 seconds
I bought these lights

i have three places I could fit them and 80% decided on the after cabin-side

for a couple of reasons. I’m just after any ones experience with this...
When I say “don’t interrupt surveyor” what I mean is don’t constantly ask questions and extend the time of his job. He’ll start getting annoyed and cut short looking where he should. Just be around...
My alarm bells would be ringing…..”such a nice man” course he is, trying to open your wallet. “Got another boat” easy said.
immediate suspicions from photos , half arsed paint work, mess in...
X2^. Excellent, straight-to-the-point just like his book

Steam bending frames in and riveting them does not fit the epoxy-builders code of ethics. “Seal all wood and lessen the numbers of piercings”
Stick to the designers scantlings - do not put extra...
how does “vell-Sue” fit or “vell-sew” . My OCD has settled almost! :D I’ve got Eric pretty good
Eric, hope I don’t seem rude but how do you pronounce your surname, it’s doing my head in every time Ian’s thread pops up.
I made a 9’ long ballast 1150# mould from 2 layers of 3/4” ply sealed with engine high temp sealant. Joins we’re just butted and overlapped with next layer, copiously screwed. Painted inside with...
Ian, you’ve prob thought of this but I was wondering if it’s possible to get in touch with a sawmill (do they still exist?) to go through their scrap pile for green offcuts? May take a fair bit of...
Looks like this build is harder than you’d imagined Ian, what with finding good timber to use. How many times have you looked longingly at the epoxy bottles? :D
Once you turn it upright are there...
