    There's a tendency, when making a mast, to let ones hands slide along the mast while walking from one end to the other. Don't do this, especially if it's a Douglas fir mast.

    Doug fir is just a splintery wood. Can you take light passes and climb cut? Both of these methods will reduce splintering but might not eliminate it completely.

    Well, not so much the individual shaving, Jake, but, say a stack of three so it averages out. Turns out a three thousandth shaving is pretty coarse, depending on your definition of coarse, of course.

    Another "when I was" story...

    When I was working building aluminum boats we marked the aluminum plate with a magic marker, outside the line. The inner edge of the line was where you cut.
