Thank you, very knowledgeable and informative.
Hello, does anyone have any familiarity with Abranet? I just bought some for a hull I'm doing. I hope it's good, but will know as soon as it gets here. There is some amount of hype about it but have...
Only use their thinner? Even if their very can tells you otherwise? read their can.
I didn't think regular paint thinner or Penetrol mixed with bottom paints. Interlux's thinner for bottom paint is 443 which is not made to be used with one part paints, it's some weird stronger...
Be aware that the 2 part paint is extremely expensive and you throw some away as your mixed up batches have to go when you're done all you can do on that batch. As a beginner I don't think you would...
In some cases you could use the store bought oil based color puties and mix them to get you color. But for a somewhat larger and important gap, an epoxy putty is good because it gives you the...
Mix your stain with some fillers (whatever they are). And you'll have to experiment some to get what you need (Mick Jagger). Apply putty to bare wood so you can sand it well, but if you have the...
It looks like that as of this morning, Thursday the 28th Feb 2013, the deal is over. Although it is still maybe the cheapest out there. There are apparently two of these models; one with hook and...
I have a couple Porter cable right angle sanders; I think they were the first model random orbit on the market, maybe 25 years ago. I think they are the weakest random orbit on the market, but I...
Order went through, but has been back ordered to March 8th. Special apparently still available, with delivery just delayed.
Woodcraft through the 28th I believe, today is the 26th. $69.95 with $9.95 basic shipping. Looks like a very good price. Seems like it's good even at a hundred.
Do the two coats of sealer actually in reality exist? If they do, I think you could go ahead and count them. But 4 coats toral? Not even in the ball park. Four coats isn't even much for inside. Also...
Does anyone have a good experience with a finish like this? I've got 4 teak folding chairs, a small table, and serving tray that I take care of on a yacht and have been for quite a few years. I...
The company used to specify TSP to remove it, I don't know about the proportions. I can't imagine using a heat gun, the coatings of Cetol are usually so thin. I'm not sure how I'd approach it myself....
I've always wondered about the qualities of the various epoxies out there and of course the prices. I have used some store brand from Donovan, labeled Mar Pro and found that it kind on crystallizes...
I don't have much luck troweling the filleting blend, it's very coarse and doesn't and doesn't come out smooth at all. Maybe I use it too dry. It's also very hard to sand; you don't want to do a lot...
My thoughts exactly. It reeks of scam. The brushes are interesting, though very very expensive and although a big selection, is there anything new. I haven't seen these before, but there is a lot...
I thought the Pratt & Lambert was gone. Maybe this "Versalite" is something different or new.
I thought the McCloskey's was extremely thin. Thinner than Schooner, maybe as thin as Awlspar. Seemed...
Good point. The epoxy Is the primer. It doesn't need to be primed, it already has been primed. And you're right, sanding the primer smooth is a huge waste of time.
It looks very little interest for something that is so hyped.
They ought to demo the thing, on the job, on a boat, not on a board on a table. I want to see it on a hull. A wood planked hull.
But then, why not just use flat white? That seems to make sense to me. Then you get the benefit of the additional hiding. And it's about the same price. And the flattening agent is very hard to come...
Thank you guys, my memory must have been wrong again. I do remember it being called flatting oil too.
It looks like the Ceros is $495 everywhere, no higher, no lower.
Is anyone using this sander? It is extremely expensive, but if it could make a 60' hull go well, it would be worth it. I do this hull by myself, lately with a Bosch dual-mode. I don't think much of...
Fine Paints of Europe is the American importer and distributor of the Dutch Schreuder Paint. Why refer to the paint by the distributor's name? What Fine Paints of Europe is really good at is hype....
God have mercy.
Dies anyone use this? I used it yesterday for a deck with Easypoxy and non-skid. It was clear! Was it always clear? I didn't remember it being clear. Obviously that makes it harder to cover. Mine did...
Have you ever heard of "Robin Hood's barn"?
I've never tried 333 to clean brushes, it's outrageously expensive. A couple or so dunks in lacquer thinner should get you going and then you can finish off in paint thinner. "Paint thinner" is not...
What contributes to the filling of the grain when varnishing is the sanding off of what finish is there. That's if you are not using a grain filling stain which does help some. If you put on many...
Where's the resin?
I thought there were Egyptian caskets with varnish still intact.
Do these magical uv inhibiters actually exist or are they some form of sales hype? Are they "new and...
Schooner Varnish Brush Cleaning:
You can't clean Schooner varnish brushes with paint thinner. I've experienced this at various times over the years, but I proved it again the other day. I...
I see now that China bristles are much coarser than Russian boar bristles, and of course that would apply only to the boar bristles not the pedestrian plain old hog bristles. Jay, maybe you ought to...
Don't take a chance with gasoline. It is way too dangerous! I know. I don't think it works that great anyway. Save and reuse your solvents.
Jay, have you noticed and then wondered why the cardboard wrappers that come with a new professional quality brush have cleaning directions that finish off by saying..."wash in warm soapy water"?...
Some Misconceptions:
As far as I know, there is no badger hair bristle varnish available in the entire world.
Badger "style" brushes or any other brushes are not specifically for varnish...
Oil finishes or wiping varnishes are for interior.
Cetol holds up very very well, no comparison whatsoever to varnish. And sometimes you will even mistake it for varnish. Varnish is very...
Wooden boat builder Jim Richardson, "Mr. Jim", of Cambridge, Md who built a small skipjack for Howard Chapelle called painted spars an abomination!
Awlgrip is ROUTINELY used on wooden boat hulls. And successfully. And big yachts, Trumpy's for one.
David G,
You make somewhat of a point, but if your point is to value experience which apparently you have, why not value it? I don't doubt that Flexnor knows a fair amount about finishing, but...
Don't Question Flexnor Because He's an Authority?
Hardly. Judge him on what seems to be the merit of what he's saying' using what ever means you have at your disposal, common sense hopefully...
When's the last time industry standard Interlux "glazing compound" was sold? Z-Spar glazing was better, whiter and smoother too. But that was in another era.
Your problem wasn't caused by the sanding. Look somewhere else.
The Epifanes Wood Finish sounds interesting; I'd like to hear more about it, especially for buildup coats.
Finesse It II is the very fine polish that would be good for this. Most people just refer to it as Finesse It. It is a very fine polish and it has no wax in it. It is just for polishing and cleaning...
Look at a black bristle Omega (Epifanes) brush or a Hamiltons and compare it to a white bristle brush and tell me which is coarser. The black sure look coarser to me.
What are these great varnishes that are no longer available? I don't know of one.
Do you think the elimination of Jetspeed had anything to do with how many cans they sold in a year? I never...
"Sealer has higher oil content than varnish". "Sealer penetrates better than thinned varnish". Hello?
My understanding of sanding sealer is that it is thinned varnish with wax added to soften it and make sanding easier. I like 'em, but that doesn't mean anything. I only used the Z Spar about once, it...
