I would put a poultice of castor oil and comfrey with a dash of hot red pepper.
A castor oil poultice is a messy thing,you'd need to change it once or twice a day. Elbow is an easy spot.

Pretty much anything built of 2 planks will be more stable with 3 or 5, all the way down to a bunch o square planks.

Leaving the dynel cloth weave to mimic canvas is a theatrical thing.
