    That is the system that John Guzzwell used aboard Trekka. We all know how well that arrangement worked for John and Trekka.

    There are better pulling boat designs for a solo rower than a dory....

    A paddle gets my Caledonia yawl, Elisabeth Grace, to/from the dock. I row for fun sometimes. Getting an outboard on ANY double ender is a P.I.T.A. It can be done. It does work. Transoms work better....

    Conestoga wagon type cover. Lightweight nylon for the canopy. PVC, fiberglass or aluminum hoops. Sockets around the perimeter for the hoops. Search this forum. There are examples.

    There is workboat built and disposable boat built. I wouldn't trust my family in something like you describe. Sorry. That's how I feel about boats.

    There are scads of 18' trailer sailer boats out there. Add a small 4-stroke outboard. Instant motorsailer. Teach your SO how to operate the motor. You are good to go.

    Having cartopped a 17' x 3' x 75 pound canoe I can say, without fear of contradiction, buy a trailer. This size and weight boat would be ideally suited to the small trailers intended for jet skis....
