Looking for my next project. I've been given a 195X Grey Marine Sea Scout engine out of a 29' Bristol sailboat. The engine is 91 cubic inches and rated for 25 hp @ 2000 rpm. Is it worth building a...
Wizbang:
They aren't smart tabs. They're 1/8" plate tabs affixed to the transom. Each side has three turnbuckles to flex the plates down. This is an older style of cav plate used mostly on vintage...
Tom,
Here's a photo of the cavitation plates.

Well I haven't updated this in a while, but I was able to launch the boat in early July.
Took a ride by the Mahogany Memories show in Essex, a few rides out of Deep River, a trip to Lake...
In progress, but you get the idea. The stiffness can really vary depending on how much you stretch the webbing during installation. I stretched it about 10% and ended up going to an extra firm foam...
As per Ken Bassett's Rascal design:
1 x 3 frame around perimeter (and between persons) with woven webbing stretched in between.
Link to the exact webbing I used:...

Been a little while since I've updated my progress. Interior panels have been varnished and are mostly in place, fuel tank and dashboard have been installed. I finished the electrical and motor...
Wizbang,
Thanks for the info on the skeg, I was just following the designers specs. Will report back on its performance
John,
Skeg is bedded in 3M 4200. I added 10" to the overall length....
Thanks for the tip Jefe. I'm going to look at the available space this weekend and will make a final decision for the foam.
Clear skeg? That's polished aluminum.

I took a short piece of 3 x 4" aluminum I-beam (extrusion was called "aluminum association"...
John, Glad to have inspired you. Rascal is not an easy build for a 15' boat. I've spent 2 1/2 years on the project and $1X,XXX on the build even with some discounts and used equipment. The boat has...
Oldad,
Seams are filled with Sikaflex 291LOT, more info in post #7
Kenjamin,
Great photo of Speedboy, I remember reading his threads in high school when I first discovered the Rascal.
I was at the 2009 WoodenBoat show in Mystic and was keeping an eye out for...
Bahma,
This is exactly what I was looking for, thank you.
Any regulation on how the foam is secured? I really don't want to pour foam in place. My thoughts are to cast foam blocks to fit...
John, frames are eastern white spruce as specified by the designer. Took a bit of searching to find some nice grade lumber. Finally found some in NH and bought almost all the stock he had.
Brian
Thanks everyone for the comments. The build was started in August of 2010 and I hope to finish within a few months.
Question about flotation foam:
Does anyone know the USCG for a powerboat...
Got the last coat of varnish on my dashboard, seat components, and floor supports tonight. Little bit of dust in the dashboard, but I'll see how it dries before I commit to a recoat.

Skegemog,
This rascal is actually a Ken Bassett design, plans are sold by our host WoodenBoat. Might be design #100, not sure.
The decking is 1/4" mahogany over a 4mm plywood subdeck. The...
Here's a little more information on the build:
The design is Ken Bassett's Rascal that has been stretch about 10". I had heard these boats had very tight cockpits as designed and wanted to give...
Long time lurker, first post. I'm starting this thread to share my work and also to keep me motivated in completing this project.
