Keep up the progress Bobby, if it were easy then everyone would do it. It sounds like you probably have it whipped this time out.
Good luck.

First was a FL14 by bateau.com and it was a great boat. Would I build it again? Since it was great on the river and I miss it I'm actually considering building another this year!
Thanks for the input Andy. Looks like a winner you have there (boat and son)
That is a nice looking kayak, thanks for the input!
George
That is a good option Steve, when I first looked at it I had confused it with a very similar looking craft, from another designer, that is about half again the size. I might have to build a mouse and...
Those pygmy kits do look nice, but I still think they are too large for my twins. I'm still thinking along the lines of the kidyak from glen-l, at least in terms of size.
...
Thanks all, some really good input and now I finally have options!
Ian, thanks for the input sir, I know the design well, but feel it's a bit much for my little ones. I'm not worried about them growing into it, we have very long winters and very short summers here...
Thanks for the input Steve, although a couple of those are a bit on the large side I think. When I said 50-80 lbs that was on the high side, my 5 yr old twin girls are currently about 38 lbs each!!...
Greetings all,
I've found a couple of plans for kid sized paddle craft like the Glen-L "kidyak", but there's not much out there that I have run across. Before giving in I thought I'd check and...
Ripping 16ft is no big deal really, you just need a support on the infeed side as well as the outfeed side and you'll be just fine. As to using a circular saw with a rip fence, I think that would...
Congrats on the splash, I knew you'd do a good job :)
Some people like access hatches to be able to check for water intrusion, but I hold to the opposite theory that they are inviting water intrusion by making a hole in the hull!
Those are for small round hatches, I wouldn't consider them essential myself, but you may wish to put them there.

I always like the looks of them and it reminds me of the runabout an uncle had when I was a kid :)
Although I have also thought of a 25hp four stroke to be more user friendly...
When I build mine I'm probably going to use regular marine ply painted dark blue for the hull and western red cedar strip planking on the decks with Seadeck (http://www.seadek.com/) on the sole with...
No problem, the sneakeasy is on my "must build" list so it's one I have poured over quite a bit and read all the online blogs and builds that I can find. I'll be building the flat bottom version as...
Ahh, gotcha.Y> I was just worried that I read somethign wrong on the plans. Seeing as how we agreed on the frames and my thought of flipping the panels came straight from the building notes written...
Did I give bad advice somewhere or...?
Several have built them and there's one exceptional example that is about 80% finished on the bateau forum:

As I read the plans it appears that they are 1/4" thick frames with 3/4" boards cut to form a border around the edges of the frames. I'm guessing this based on the dotted lines running a few inches...
Congrats Tim, she's a fine craft indeed.
Very nice!
Yeah, what he said, plus I'm guessing that measurement is at the back, up front there's a lot more freeboard on this boat. :)
Peter, the paint cost roughly $9.32 per coat and it has three coats :) (two days of drying and light sanding with 220 grit between coats)
Pipefitter, I actually used the same methods you describe...
45 hours and $238 into the project and she's off the strongback, on the trailer and ready to finish up the insides. I still have to build some decent bunks for the trailer too.
Another note, So...
I haven't built that particular one, but I've built two of Jeff's boats so far. The completed one on his site looks nice to me and if you have facebook there is a spirainternational page with other...
You're welcome Thorne.
I don't think the advanced (or 8X now) really cures much faster, I think it just has more initial tack to it or so it seemed to me. When I bought it I was hoping it would...
I used two tubes of the "old style" and two tubes of the "new style 3X" on my boat build a few weeks ago and they are the same thing as far as I can tell.
The 8X is most likely the same as the...
Thanks for the input gents, I too have caught more fish from jon boats than I have without. This will be my 4th completed boat, although I have three others in various stages of build so it's the 7th...
Wow, just incredible Tim.
Oh yes, I had to remind myself today that the original goal was to see how quick and how cheap I could build a boat. I was just about to start mixing a third coat of primer with the intentions of...
38 hours, $164 in and I have one coat of paint drying. Tomorrow it gets another :)

So after a total of 36 hours and roughly $150 I now have one coat of epoxy primer on the hull.
After some sanding you can see that the fairing compound was just enough. The weave is filled and the compound is tapered out smoothly.
...
Most people's fairing nightmares come from using too much fairing compound. You only need enough to fill the weave of your glass and enough to taper down to nothing on each side. Any extra buildup is...
I've used MDO on a few projects and I think it's pretty good stuff, especially if you are like me and live somewhere that good materials is just not avaliable without paying insane freight charges on...
Fiberglassed the seams and coated the hull with two coats of epoxy.

I forgot to post my pic from celebrating the whiskey plank, well....in...
Well, back to work for a couple of hours and the qhiskey plank is in place so to speak. She's ready for some sanding and then it's time for epoxy and fiberglass.

Congrats man, enjoy that Bentley :)
There's not much in the way of "local merchants" out here undfortunately, but I understand what you're saying. I was even told by the manager at our largest lumber yard that "nobody makes mahagony...
Thanks for the input guys. This epoxy is referred to as a boat building "marine" epoxy, I was just a little concerned as the viscosity seems kinda thick for laminating. It's cheap enough though so...
no, I don't have the numbers for the epoxy I have been using or it would have been easy for me to decide on my own ;) I was hoping someone on here knew teh numbers for "standard" marine type epoxy.
I'm in my typical fight to balance boat building with budget and one of the costs that is killing me is shipping on my epoxy. I have been very pleased with the marinepoxy bought from...
Yes, the winds do make it fun, especially when you are trying to troll 4 rods in a light boat on a big lake with heavy winds! I want to build a sailboat, but I don't know if Wyoming is a good place...
I like it!
Although, I can't recall a time when I would need a motor on a sailboat in Wyoming, unless the wind broke your mast:p
Thanks everyone for the kind words, I'm working nights tonight - tuesday night so there won't be much progress going on the next few days. After that I'll be back at it full force for next weekend....
Well, A little more progress for the night. I'll have to let her sit like this while I work the next four nights then it's back to boat building.
...
Wow, very nice work Tim!
You're welcome Tim. Thanks for showing interest in it, I never really planned on having a build thread for this quickie. I figured at most I'd post up a couple of launch pics, but I know how it is...
