Just a thought... it's much easier to do the interior clean-up, sanding etc before you do a lot of other interior stuff...
The build looks great!

1/8" ply is often called "door skin", maybe ask for that. Also, I found cheap 1/4" ply to be better than 1/8" which can be too "floppy"...
No, any reasonably good home sewing machine will work fine. But you need to use the proper size needles for the thread they supply with the kit. The instructions that come with the kit tells what...

A few years ago a friend introduced me to a top pro Brazilian piano player telling him that I played Brazilian guitar. His reply was "wow, that's a lot of guitars!" BY:D
Thanks again for all the thoughtful replies.
So when I soak the palm in water, will the rawhide part also soften? Or is that the point, to temporarily soften the rawhide?
Thanks again...

Thanks, gents; the one Santa brought is from Sailrite

I got a sailmaker's palm for Christmas :)
Any suggestions on what to use to soften the leather for a "custom fit"?
Thanks, Merry Christmas to all

As the doctors always say about all the horrible stuff they prescribe every day, "the benefits outweigh the risks." :D
uhhh, the "ark of the covenant" isn't (wasn't) a boat... ;-)
There are "oriole feeders", similar to hummingbird feeders, available. A friend has one (or more) and fills it with grape jelly. Helps keep the orioles from taking over the hummingbird feeders... :-)...
I'm sure you're right; I'm going back 60+ years... but I'm pretty sure that where ever it was I saw it suggested it was PT Barnum... probably an apocryphal attribution...;-)
This reminds me of a quote attributed to P.T. Barnum; "You can never go broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public."
Yes, thanks Jeff. Titebond Company does not use the term "gap filling" as one of its properties...

I believe the "gap filling" property of TB3 means it's an effective adhesive for open grained woods like mahogany, but still requires very good mating surfaces. Epoxy, on the other hand, will fill...

Duckworks bbs also carries it; I bought a "leathering kit" from them several years ago which included the Oarsman tallow. I figure (at now 77 yrs old) that little tin of tallow will last me the rest...

Here's howI did mine; used strips screwed to the "frame" to clamp in the sandpaper. The screws don't contact the workpiece.

Not really, the radius of the plane iron (or a radiused card scraper as I used) just has...

Why not just a couple of half hitches? Easy to tie, secure, and easy to spill... ??
BTW, regarding terminology, many builders/designers use the term "hog" and "keelson" interchangeably; e.g. Ian Oughtred does both in the plans he draws and in his "Clinker Plywood Boatbuilding...
This thread reminds me of a piece in a Herb Caen column in the SF Chronicle 50+ years ago when "vanity" license plates were first becoming available. Of course the California DMV tried to screen...
Agreed...
Looks like a fun build and a beautiful boat. Oughtred's plans are a pleasure to work from.
Have fun!
